I thought it would be beneficial if we said what all we know to be edible in the area that we live in. tell what you like to eat and if you want when the edible are ok to eat. I have always been interested in plants and I would like to learn what is ok to eat in other places. Very Happy so I'll start:
here in the southern US I like to get wild
blackberries (mid summer)
muscadine (late summer/ almost fall)
and hunny suckle. (spring)

other things you can find are
persimmons (fall)
onion
cattail
water lilly
pansy
some daylillys
and pecans (fall)

But around here.....

Most cactus including
-Chollas (ch-oy-a) both christmas, and pencil as well as the "jumping"
-prickly pear (palms, and fruit)
Although I hear the Saguaro can be poisonous. Confused But many contain Vit. C.
You can find and eat those year round, but the prickly pear fruit is a summer thing.

There are also many different kinds of plants to eat like....
-desert hackberries (mid spring)
-jojoba beans (although some say it isn't good to eat them) (mid summer)
-mesquite beans (chew on them for a sweet treat, but spit it all out)
-pinon nuts
-juniper berries

Here is the desert hackberry plant...

and the berries....

Most are good, but a few are really sour. So I pick a handful, then shove them all in my mouth to balence it out. Very Happy I think they are my favorite thing to eat in the desert.

Very Happy Everything out here is poky. Laughing It's not bad, just think of an almost dead bush, and that is kind of what one of those is like.

Just walking out in the back field, I found a bunch of spring edibles. The wild grapes are just getting there new leaves... yum yum... we add that to our salads. (Lebanese cuisine uses grape leaves alot. I'm not Lebanese but I love the food). The grasses are going to seed and my kids and I love to carefully pull out and eat the tender white part of the stalk. The wild carrots are coming up now, too. they are not big enough yet but are still tasty. (Just make sure that they smell like carrots and the foliage should smell pleasent when crushed in your fingers. There are some deadley look-a-likes out there.) Dandelions and chikory are out but I wait a little longer if I'm going to roast the roots and grind them to add to my coffee. I'll end it with my good friend the daylilly... I love this plant yearround... eat the buds just before they open, or after the open, I dry them and add to meals as a spice, the new stalks are good boiled and the root clusters are excellent boiled steamed or raw.... hummmmmmmm.... now I'm hungry again.
Rick
