Ok here's one I learned about from scouts, and mastered on paper with math. It lets you measure an exact distance without actually measuring it. Well anyways here's how it works.

Here we will be measuring the distance across a raging river that's very dangerous to step in. Step one is to find a visual landmark on the opposite bank of the river. Here I have a rock as the landmark.

Step Two: We're going to place a stake across from the rock. (Black dot= stake) We will get a compass reading to the rock just so we're accurate. It's 0* to the rock. Next we lay out our walking course that's parallel to the river bank. Angle isn't important here as it will work just the same if it's not perpendicular to the line from you to the rock. Use a compass to stay on the course exactly.

Step Three: Walking along the bank we'll pace out a length and place a stake, then we'll pace out the same distance, going the same dirrection and place a second stake.

Step Four: We will be walking from the last stake in a heading opposite from the first stake to the rock. Remember it was 0* from the first stake to rock so we'll be traveling 180*. As we travel we'll be looking at the middle stake and walking until it lines up with the rock. The visual line is in red.

Step Five: Now we're at spot where the middle stake and the rock line up from where we are. We'll now put a stake down where we're standing. Now the distance from stake number one on the far right and the rock is the same as the distance between the two stakes on the far left.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Smile
