my rain suit is just one of the ones that my dad was issued at work. They are rubber and keep the rain out. I dislike how much you sweat in them tho, and since the rubber doesn't like to fold much they are a pain to put in a pack without robing you of all your space. This is why I carry a couple poncho's in my pack rather than taking good rain gear. Untill I can afford to get a good set of rain gear I'l use my cheap poncho version!!

i remember last hunting season when I fell in a stream about 2 miles back in the woods. It was winter, just cold enough that it could snow but it wasn't. I fell in about knee deep and just had on some cargo pants. Needless to say it was a cold walk home.

Depends on what your purpose is in wearing a duster. They're great for riding horses, because of the ease. And they're very cowboy/traditional looking... can look very good.
Why do you think a duster, or oilskin (I assume you mean duster-style), is better than modern rain-gear??
Look at what the guys wear on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch", while fishing king crab in the Bering Straits... they're not wearing dusters, for obvious reasons.
For general hiking/backpacking/survival use... i.e. functionality... I think you'd be much better off getting a rain suit. Good quality top and bottom rain-suit/water-repellent-suit... fleece/wool layer, and wicking underlayer... highly flexible for big variations in temperature and climate conditions. Strip off, or put on what you don't need, or need. I think you'd be set.
Personally I like the look and tradition of dusters for wearing around town... but I think they're simply too heavy and not practical for wilderness use (except for riding and such) compared to modern clothing options. If buying for hiking and survival use, I would go with modern stuff, cleverly layered... hands-down.

The only problem with dusters are that their time has passed, and now anyone that wears one is out of place, and watched a lot closer. Not something you want in an urban situation.
