Rain Barrels |
|
I recently purchased a rain barrel to collect the rain water, to use that to water my gardens. It'll take a bit longer, but we'll save money, use less energy and help with our town's water supply.
This is the one we got: http://www.arbourshop.com/category.php/Arbour_Rain_Barrel
I'm loving it. It only took one rain fall for it to fill completely, and not even heavy rain, just one of those days where it would rain normally. My daughter loves it too, she likes to help me water and I like that we're teaching her at such an early age to respect the environment.

That's a nice one. It's good ya'll are teaching her young.
I use big trash cans to help collect the water.Especially during the hurricane season in case we loose power
and all. When We loose it We also loose Septic.

Yeah, that's no fun.
Do you have a screen over it so mosquitoes don't breed in them?

Here's my rain barrel. The flexible green pipe carries water from the downspout into the barrel in the summer. In the winter, I connect the flexible pipe to the white pipe attached to the fence and water goes into the yard. In the summer, the overflow near the top of the barrel goes into that pipe. Where the hose comes out the bottom of the barrel, I put a Y adapter so I can send water through a long hose to the garden, or through a short hose to a watering can or whatever.
The barrel hides behind a faux picket fence gate that I made from plywood.
The barrel gets water from about 1/2 the house roof plus the carport roof. It fills up pretty fast during thunderstorms or all day rains, and the water lasts through dry periods. I very rarely have to use the hose in the garden.

Yeah, we have a half barrel under the downspout for watering the plants on the back porch. Save a buck or two.
