I got out to Lee Valley this morning & picked up a Hiking stick Brass tip.
It has a point for dirt & river crossing & a rubber tip for sidewalk hikes i guess or harder ground. Its pretty nice looking.
I also had to buy the Taper tool. Its a 5/8" Taper, pretty much just a huge pencil sharpener Surprised It was worth it for me as i have 5 hiking sticks i want to put these ends on. The tips are $ 17.50 & the Taper tool was $ 22.50 + tax.

This is the maple hiking stick

This is the Taper Tool.

this is the pointy one Laughing

the rubber tip.

Fine ! Cool

Thats a good idea. If you break a stick I bet you can find an endless supply of more! Smile

I only use hard woods, if possible. Maple, Hazelnut. I really would like to get a Cherry one, but tough to find one strait enough.

That is a cool little upgrade, but I prefer to go without any add-ons on my walking stick. Just personal preference. Cool

I always use hickory for my walking sticks. Some may say that is too heavy, but I like a good, sturdy staff. I want something that can support weight and that I know I can depend on when the footwork gets dicey. In my opinion, the blunt end of a stick is the perfect balance between providing traction in the dirt and shock absorbsion on hard ground.

That is neat upgrade, though. Cool

And if you happened to have the taper tool with you, you could sacrifice one of your walking sticks to provide emergency tinder in a pinch. Surprised Very Happy Wink

See were i disagree is the traction part, thats why i got these. In soft soil a blunt end is fine. But hard packed trails & rocks, not good.
Ive had my hiking stick slip out going up & down the trail. This point is awesome. I was just out today with the tip & sweet traction now.

Your area may be totaly differant from here as far as ground/soil is concerned.
Here its Rocky and hard packed. Ive use my hiking sticks for years without the tips and its fine, but with these tips, i " Never " slip Cool

Yeah, I hear where you're coming from. Around here, all I'm walking through is leaf litter and soft topsoil with the occasional dry creek bed crossing. Easy hiking in your book. Laughing

I can see where you'd need a tip like that to mantain stability on the hard-packed ground.

Cheers. Cool
