M40 reviews "survivorman"

A survival web site that seems to be growing in popularity has reviewed Les's series #1

I do enjoy looking and reading some of the articles on this site. many of the items he selects for his survival kit I use as well. Although I don't like his selections of .5mil plastic drop cloths or survival blankets.

Opinions are like a.. holes everyone has one.

I don't agree with him at all Confused
Quote:
...drink water directly from a jungle stream. No boiling, no filter, he just stuck his head in and drank his fill. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. But then again, Les KNOWS he's going to get rescued at the end of his stay, right?
He used a conk shell to boil the water and he also drank coconuts.

Quote:
...eat a wild mushroom in a field in the Canadian mountains. This is a great way to DIE, and for what? A mushroom has almost ZERO calories or vitamins. They are 99% air and water. Most are poisonous. Mushrooms are NOT WORTH IT! Even if Les is an expert on mushrooms, he should have edited this scene out! Les was simply showing off for the camera. And he was doing so at the possible expense of the lives of any viewer who tries to imitate him.
He said, don't try this unless you know exactly what you doing.

Quote:
...build what would otherwise be decent shelters, except that he stops piling on brush after a few inches of cover. Not enough to shield from rain or wind, never mind hold in any body heat. I think Les is worried about killing plants.
I think most of them were good, he's trying to film everything at the same time.

Quote:
...wander into a jungle or forest to "find his way out" of places he entered by water. Gee Les, why not just follow the river or coastline back the way you came? Is it that it wouldn't make for good TV? It's fine to be entertaining, but not at the expense of giving bad advice.
He's trying to play a lost hiker to put himself in those circumstances to show what to do.

Quote:
...waste hours making the s****iest slingshot I've ever seen. Why not emphasize simple hunting tools that actually work? We all know the answer to this one. Les's heart bleeds for every critter he kills, and he's constantly railing on about environmental crap. Not something people who are struggling to survive should be worried about!
I didn't think the slingshot was at all useful but it's something to keep you thinking and occupied.

Quote:
...waste hours making the worst figure 4 trap I've ever seen only to forget to bait it. Was this an oversight? Is the reason that he's never built one, or is the real reason that he doesn't want to actually catch anything? (don't want to harm those animals!).
The figure four would have worked just fine, just like his paiute deadfall did.

All i will say to what tfisher posted is that its real easy to find fault in other people & take them apart for every little thing done.
Every body thats into the outdoor survival stuff at some point will make a not so good choice.
I dont care who you are or how long a person practices the survival skills, you will make mistakes.
Les is out there, on TV he is totaly exposed him self to the world. So, once again, it s easy to find fault.
But i can bet you all the people out there that dont have TV shows that do survival skills screw up often, we just dont see it. I for one, am one of them. You have to make mistakes, to correct them & learn.
We are just humans, we have tons of faults, some worse than others.

Great post Drummer.

I know I have been practicing survival skills every since i was 12 years old(and thats been awhile) and I have made many mistakes, I even have the scars to prove it.

I have seen critics on everyone I have studied, "Cody Lundin", "Les Stroud", "Tom Brown" and others. It is good to read there criticisms but it is better for a person to study and practice and form their own opinions. Keeping in mind that every situation is different.

Television is a unique media, A person such as Les who has to create something educational, entertaining, high quality and marketable to viewers and then pitch it to network exec's is a tough balancing job. To much teaching detail and its stiff and boring....to much entertaining then it leans to the fictional side.

IMO........Les does an excellant job balancing this and he produces a high quality product. Les mentions his goals on his DVD and I think he meets them.

Anyway I guess I will wait for the critics to develope their own TV series when they motivate enough as Les has.

Nicely said tfisher. I have said it before, and I'll say it again. Les does a great job, and if he makes a many mistakes in a show who cares. There has to be a lot of people who are intrested in surviving and practicing bushcraft because of this show. It's more of an average joe show compared to some of the others out there.
