Zippo Lighters

Are they worth it? Do they break too fast? Your thoughts

I have one but I'd go with butane, I think the fuil drys up way to fast in zippos Very Happy

Well, they are nice, but they do leak, and dry up pretty fast. I dont think it should be something that would be in a pack as a one and only, but to have one day-to-day in you pocket would make a nice addition to any edc Wink

Are Zippos kind of old school?(i.e. leaky, fuel-guzzler) Very Happy

Zippo's have one benefit over butane lighters, They'll light in the wind. I've had those things going like a small blow torch. The wind blows the flame sideways and burns the hand holding it. Sounds like a torch too when it happens.

I have had a Zippo for years & never had any prob's at all. I think its well worth the money.

Had a zippo a long time ago and put it away for safe keeping, couldn't remember where I put it. That was a loss as they great and dependable.

Mine is kinda old, maby 10 years. I find it doesn't keep fluid long as it evaporates from it pretty quick. Aside from that they are unbeatable.

I don't know if any of you remember, but I did a test of two BIC lighters vs one Zippo then did a write up and took photos. Maybe I should do that all again, but this time toss one of those "outdoor" lighters in the mix. Stay tuned while I ponder this one.... Question

I carry a Zippo day in and day out. They are UBER-reliable as long as: you fill it about once a week, and you check the flint once every two or three months. I use mine daily, and so I fill it regulary, usually Monday morning. Yes, you can over-fill it. If you do and put it in your pocket, the excess fuel can leak and you will discover it when your skin begins to burn (hurts! a little water will clear it up). A Zippo's fuel will evaporate over time even if you don't use it. If you use yours regularly and fill it on a regular basis, it will work when you need it. A good fill up will usually last me better than a week.

I love a Zippo, but I have a Bic in my PSK. I figure that I will at least have a few days worth of use in my Zippo at the beginning of a survival situation, but after that I had better have a back up if I can't refill it. Yeah, a Bic would almost do the same job, but as TomassisX said, the Zippo is much better in windy conditions.

The Zippo I have now I have been carrying over ten years. The only maintenance I've had to do was to trim the wick and replace flints. You can get space wicks and flints to keep on hand, but the wick in mine is still the original.

What it all comes down to is that there's just something cool about a Zippo, from the sound it makes when it opens or closes to the little extra "flavor" it gives a smoke. Very Happy

Every Zippo I've ever owned has been lost/stolen. I will never invest in something so small ever again. If its smaller than a baseball, I'm going to lose it.

I lose things that I thougt was not posible to lose. my trumpet for instance, yeah lost in my own house case and all, my nice camping hat was missing for 3 months. I'm a loosen machine. cant find my knife. just found my flint but lost the knife! Mad

seems I had a liter that looked similar to a zippo....dont know where that is ether. Confused

I feel ya Wildthing. I'm the same way.. However my North Face Denali jacket which I paid an arm and a leg for last year was taken from my closet and given to salvation army. Thats what I get for moving back in with the rents eh?

My Zippo is from my Grandfather...It was his while he was aboard the USS Zellar, a naval destroyer after world war II. I use it, it still works as good as the day he got it.
