Bear Spray |
|
On the old forum someone mentioned that he spoted a can of bear spray in the Mountain epsiode. Well I checked it out and yeah it does look that way. Looks like Les brought one extra item, which is a good idea since bears run vast in that area.
You cant see the actual bottle but u can see the orange clip in the episode.
Its this one:

Yeh, I remember that debate! To be honest, I have no problem with Les bringing something for protection. It's not like he used it for his week of fun in the sun!

lol... I personally thing that he should carry a firearm. Like a revolver with knock down power. And only use it in a situation where a bear or similar creature wishes to eat him.

I can totaly understand when your in the deep woods & there are Bears about you would be wise to have a can of Bear spray. I have been Hiking the BC mountains ever since i was 5 years old with my Dad.
And i now Hike in Grizzly area in Manning Park. And i have Never ! Ever ! came across a bear in my whole life of hiking.
I have seen wet bear scat on some trails telling me they have been here very recently.
But have never seen a bear on the trail. I guess thats why i do not carry bear spray myself.
I always keep a clear mind & stay very alert to suroundings
Im always on the look out down the trail, behind me, up the slope's.

there is also "bear bangers" which are small explosives, much like some fireworks, that can be fired from a shotgun (with an open choke) or from a pen launcher designed for the explosive. The noise is suposed to drive bears away by scarring them. I have seen these used on documentries in urban areas to scare bears back to the wilderness. Maby les should think about carrying these, loud noises could scare just about any wild animal i think. BUT he would have to keep from using them as a firestarted lol.

Knockdown power is a myth, but I would sure like to try it out if a threat was in my face.
BTW check this vid out. It was filmed here in Arizona up on one of the Reservations. The two people shooting it are friends of mine, and were taking a photographer out from Az highways magazine for some awsome bear shots. Here is the rest of the story...
 | | Well, that was easy enough to do since that year was a great Gambel oak crop and there was a multitude of bears up around Dry Lake. The photographer (who is a very interesting and brave grandmother!) was fearless about bears and would run after them with her tripod and camera to get close enough to get a good shot. After a day of watching some of that behavior I got very concerned for her safety and decided to give her a can of bear spray (along with some advice about being a little more careful around bears).
Anyway, the morning we got this video, my husband and I had left the photographer in a ground blind near the water so she could get some shots of the bears that came in. My husband and I went elsewhere and got some elk and bear video and then when we came back to see how she was doing, we saw she was photographing a bear across the water from her. Then we noticed a bear walking up toward her from behind her. Eventually she noticed that bear also and tried to get pics of it, but she had a large telephoto lens on and the bear was too close for it. And the bear just kept coming toward her, not really aggressively, but I think it was just very curious. She was in camo and had no-scent on, so I think it was hard for the bear to figure out what that object was. (it's also possible it smelled a granola bar in her backpack). So anyway, we knew she had the bear spray and so we just sat down and filmed the event |

That's actually a grandmother. She spent the morning chasing them down to get photos.

I always have a canister in my right pocket when I'm out, and I see no problem with Les carrying a can.. He should have noted it though, and a little bit of bear safety. They're cheap insurance, worth having.
By the way, these sprays are POWERFUL! I test-sprayed mine once, and three weeks later for reasons unknown, I decided to lick the area where the pepper spray exits.. Crazy stuff. My mouth began burning, and eventually I swallowed, and was in a coughing fit for three minutes. (To quote Les: "That's about as stupid as it gets!" Can't imagine taking a load of it into the lungs, eyes..

The stuff I carry says Extremely Flammable on the lable. You have to dispose of empty containers the same way you do paint cans I think. The product contains a petroleum distilate.
