What can be used as a signal in the bush or wilderness?
Obviously a mirror, but what else?

smoke. but when in the smoky Mountains you have to trough a lot of green leaves and things to make it black so people will know it is a fire and not the smoke of the mountaind.

Smoke is a good one, fire in general, at niight time building a huge fire is effective.

yea but you want to fire 3 shots (after dark) with a paus between each shot. That way people just don't think you are hunting (during the day) or just some random noise.

The blade of a knife will reflect the sun. A nice 8 inch bowie would work well.
My glasses would work as well, sun glasses.
And you could fill up your cooking pot, if you had one, with water, the same as the reflection off water, we all know how brite that can be to get it in the eyes.

water is a very good reflective surface. That is why you get burnt so bad at the beach, sun + water refective surface + sand reflective surface = uv rays (and sunlight) from all angles!!!!

~ Anything that is brightly coloured that you can wave around
~ Banging something against a metal can

rather than yelling if you can find two rocks to smash together or two sticks to bang together could have the same effect without killing your throat. If you yell a lot you will dry the heck outta your throat, and unless you have a lot of water that will just make your life that much worse for the duration of your situation.

Thats true, also if you yell and it is unsuccessful it follows you begin to panic. Its strange but it often happens

lol there is always running around screeming untill you wear yourself out and fall and hit your head and die... I'd say that's probably the last bit of sanity you'd lose before die'n of exposure.

I think a whistle would be better than yelling. It can be heard much further away and you wont kill your throught in the process. I always have one with me when hiking.
A Cell phone would be my ideal choice

When I listed yelling, I meant occassional yelling if you had nothing else to make noise with. An advantage of yelling is that someone hearing you would know you are in trouble, whereas they might not associate other noise with distress. (I'm reminded of an episode of "Becker" in which Dr. Becker complains that the neighbour above him disturbed him all evening by making a lot of noise. It turns out that the neighbour died of a heart attack after repeatedly pounding out "SOS" on the the floor of his apartment.)
If the pilot of an aircraft sees you:
~ Stand with your arms stretched upwards (The international signal for 'get me out of here').
~ Lay on the ground with your arms extended above your head (The international signal for 'medical help needed).
