Hey I went to the tactical military store and bought a knife. Got a RAT 3. It's the D2 model with the sage micarta handle. Pretty sweet.

Just bought an Ontario Knives SP-6, it's really nice... I'll do a review of it soon.

So, I was originally going to just get a Grohmann Survival #4, then I talked with a buddy of mine who used to work in a knife store (and is also a knife fiend) and he wasn't so happy with the design. Mostly, he didn't like the thickness of the ricasso (the part of the blade closest to the handle), or the steel choice (4110 ~ 440A)
His personal choice for that kind of knife (general use survival knife) was a Cold Steel SRK, and also pointed out Fallkniven F1s, although the blade is a good deal shorter and they are somewhat pricier than either the Grohmann or the SRK (based on online prices).
Is there any chance that the ricasso might be an issue when batoning with a Grohmann, or is the thinness due to the grinding largely just appearances? I'd guess it's a non-issue, but I'd rather someone else answer that.
Also, what of the steel? I've heard all sorts of things arguing both ways for 404A, but mostly against.
Anyone with other suggestions, please feel free.
In other news, apparently my father has an old Puma White Hunter with original leather sheath (made in july 1967 by the stamp). It looks more or less exactly like this, but without the polishing scuffs: http://astorarms.ca/images/Accessories/Puma%20White%20Hunter%20model%206377,%20DSC_3419.jpg so I won't bother taking photos. They seem to go for a fortune, so even if he was willing to give it to me, I just couldn't bring myself to use it. Maybe I'll do a review for laughs. He used to use it (sparingly, it seems), so a bit more can't hurt.

Ive never had any problems with the #4. I lost love with it by just trying out other knives. Not because I didn't like it, but because I just wanted to try other knives.
That said, if your going to get one, make sure you get a military style sheath, one that has a fold over flap, one thing about the Grohmanns is that they have a design flaw in the normal model sheaths, the cut a section of the sheath each time you put it back in it.
If you have any questions about the knife, or want photos let me know.
If it were me, I would take the #4 over a coldsteel any day, I dont agree with their politics, and I refuse to buy them anymore.
If you could find an older srk with carbon V and can reprofile the edge, then do it. But other wise I would stick with grohmann.
Grohmann does use a variant of 440A, but they do a better job on heat treat than Kershaw, and the steel performs very well.
Again, any other questions let me know.

I feel the same as Fonly about the current Cold Steel products.
The stuff from a few years back is better in terms of materials used, but for the same money, you could consider one of the K Bar/Becker line.
http://www.knifeworks.com/beckercombatbowie-1.aspx
I've owned both the Becker & the SRK & the Becker is vastly better in terms of materials, usability, ethics, advertising & just about everything else.
They're made in the US by the company that sells them...not overseas by a company that slaps thier name on them.
It's a sad fact that Cold Steel has lost a lot of thier good reputation in recent years due to thier hyped up advertising & lower quality materials.
The BK 2 , BK 7 & BK 9 would all be a better quality blade than any of the current Cold Steel products.
