Hey guys, I was just wondering how most of you motivate yourself to "get out" and do it all...

I usually am solo on my wanting to go camping which dullens Embarassed my mood.

I love going camping & fishing/hunting but dont do it nearly as often as id like =/

Any advice? Very Happy

Hmmm.....I don't really have to motivate myself to do stuff. I just like doing it. My dad goes hiking with me occasionally, but most of my outdoor stuff is solo, too.

Maybe you could find someone in your area that has the same interests as you, and you could hang out together.

To tell you the truth, I kind of like the peace and solitude. Cool

Just getting out there, honing your skills, trying out new gear, the tranquility of the woods, enjoying the scenery. There are innumerable reasons to get out there and do it. Very Happy

Yeah I as well love the outdoors. If I had to choose where my dream home would be, it would be in small wood shelters alongside all of you =P

One other thing I notice that inhibits me is that I live in the center of the city Embarassed

Makes for long drives n such =/

Perhaps when I get some money ill go again...

BTW, how do I tell the GF im going without her being upset lol... Need help with this mostly Razz

What makes her upset about you going?

How do you normally tell her?

Knowing what causes the problem is the first step to finding the solution.

Hmm lol, well I guess just me being away makes her upset... We dont see eachother often, only the weekends atm... Which is also my free time for camping etc Crying or Very sad

Normally I just ask if she would like to go with. If the answer is no I usually end up not going. And when I suggest that im going to go alone, she tells me "You'd really go without me..." or something along those lines.

Girls r just too much sometimes Razz

Maybe one time ill just go and see what she does...

P.S. Ty for your help man Very Happy

You need to tell somebody where you are going and when you are coming back. Don't just leave unannounced. That is dangerous.

Try to get her to go with you next time. Make her enjoy it. Cool

> I find myself out in the woods by myself more often than anything. Even when i go fishing, 75 % of the time its just me. To motivate a person ?... Hmmm, i just love being in the outdoors so i have never had to " motivate " myself Cool Maybe think of something you want to practice in the woods to get you out more. But really for me its just getting out into peace & quiet, taking pictures, or catching fish, or hunting for a new zone, that motivates me alot. Going to new Hikes as well gets me out. Ive jsut never had to talk myself into doing it ? its been a self motivated thing since my Dad took me & my brother out hiking when we were like 7 & 9 years old, its in my Blood Laughing Cool

I know what you mean Dave... Once im out there it bring such a great feeling of relief if you will.

But its the 2-3 hour drive to the woods that gets me to stay in town more often than not due to gas prices rising again... Evil or Very Mad

I am planning to go this weekend with an extra $20 I have saved (although that wont warrant much food Crying or Very sad )

Well, I think im going to start trying to stand up to my GF's cute little whines that get me to stay for another boring weekend Shocked

Maybe it might be a good idea to make something for her while your out, or buy a little something before you go out or on your way back just to let her know you were thinking about her. You could even just write her a nice romantic letter while your out relaxing between doing things.

As for food you can buy plenty with a few bucks you can check out my post about cheap meals. But remember the 2 basic most cheapest things that will provide you 8 of the 16 most vital enzymes your body needs is Pinto Beans and Rice, then maybe buy a little thing of salt or take some with you and a bullion cube or 2 to flavor the rice and your all set. You could even take a slingshot, or other natural hunting tool to see if you could provide meat for yourself (if it's legal in your area to do so, a lot of places let you hunt small game like rabbits, squirrels without a permit or license) and practice cleaning game.

When I went on my 5 day trip I took just a few quart size ziplock bags (oatmeal, sugar, coffee) and just a few small things of trail mix and then fished for the rest of my food (I did hunt, but dang squirrels wouldn't come out when I had my gun!).

This also allows you to practice making traps for game, or fishing (remember only if it's legal in your state without a license or permit)

But you could easily get 2 nalogene water bottles fill one 3/4 way with rice, the other 3/4 way with pinto beans and then put a handful of bullion cubes in it and a small baggie of salt and you would have 2-3 days worth of food no problems and it won't harm your body at all as like I said those provide the 8 enzymes (or whatever there called) of the 16 your body needs (the body uses those 8 to make the other 8 it needs).

Also maybe take a packet or 2 of hot cocoa, or some tea bags and a little sugar if you want something good to drink when you wake up or before bed (I always enjoyed a hot cup of tea before bed while camping).

Also remember you don't have to go out to practice your skills, you can always do other things survival related at home here and there like take your gear out back and make yourself a meal with what you would take to practice your cooking outdoor skills, or just going out back and work on fire starting skills and if your worried about messing things up a hobo stove, or collapsible stove work great.

I don't get out as much as I would like due to the driving distances when I was in California, and due to the fact I can't drive right now due to my car not having it's silly inspection sticker without worrying about getting a ticket, so what I do is use my gear as much as possible for cooking and fixing things so I get use to using them and only them if possible. I make new gear (like I just made a hobo stove), or bring a few pieces of wood from the place you go camping next time you go and work on making yourself a homemade spoon, fork, spatula, cooking board, etc.

Lots of things you can do, it's all about looking here and there when you have a chance.

Hope these ideas help!

Yah I was planning on making a couple figure 4 deadfalls but set them off after I was finished as I see no use in killing an animal unless extremely needed.

Think maybe if I see a lot of rabbit sign, might set up a few snares for practice.

Thanks for the suggestions on food Cold, quite interesting & helpful Cool

Also no backyard anymore... (Damned apartments) Laughing

Hopefully this needed trip will allow me to learn some survival tricks and yet relieve me of the city life Very Happy

Thanks again guys, you have been MORE than helpful Very Happy

High fives for everyone!!! Laughing

So what city do you live in, if you don't mind me asking? Phoenix?

Maybe you and Az could hook up for a bachelor's camping weekend.(he's from Chandler, just outside of Phoenix)

ColdSoul had some super suggestions, as well. Cool

Have fun this weekend anyway. Very Happy

ok as a girl, doing something special for her while your out there is a great idea, but I do hope she'll come along with you. well I got a Survivorman Poster in my bedroom and just seeing Les is motivation enough for me. I go city hiking and love it. I too live in a apartment and use my deck for some practice of things. and coldsoul had wonderful advice on food, thanks coldsould. but sometimes when watching Survivorman can't get me going I think of all the nature I'll see and critters.

Motivation for gettting out? And problems with the wife ALLOWING me to go?

Yep, if I go without her she is ticked off! She considers it me sneeking off and having fun without her.

when you are a camper you have to pick your women properly. When my wife and I got married we combined our gear for a total of 12 tents, a shelf full of sleep systems. Cooking gear out the wazoo. Four, count that as 4, suv type transports, two cargo trailers. At one point we could equip 56 ccampers for a weekend stay and strech tentage for over 100 feet.

If I do not take my wife out for a good airing on a regular basis she is intolerable. Missing camping trips for an extended period is the only time she gets grumpy on me. Lucky man that I am!

Pick your women wisely.

How do I motivate myself? I just get up and do it. I get the feeling like I don't want to often enough, but I know I will feel a lot better once I am out there and actually doing something. And when I get back, it was worth it. I am lucky enough right now to be single so the issue with the ladies isn't an issue of mine.

Jou...how ya doin' ????

Get that young lady in here with us & we'll have her motivated in no time Very Happy
There are lots of good people here & not too many scary ones Wink that are more than willing to share thier experiences with someone who's new to the wilderness thing.
Sometimes hearing or reading about how much fun it is to get out will make other folks want to get out too.

Good luck with it & welcome.

Cliff

Just another quick suggestion..

You can also just go for walks around the neighborhood, or a local park if there is one nearby and look for tracks and try and identify the animals. I enjoy doing that. I noticed a track on the ground level (from the 2nd floor balcony of my place I am staying) and as able to correctly identify it as a squirrel track while looking through my tracks book. Then about 3-4 days later I saw a gray squirrel come out and climb the tree, a week later I saw a baby gray squirrel doing the same.

Maybe you could take your GF for a walk in the park and look at the birds and go over together what type of birds they are, or what animals made what tracks.

Most girls enjoy going for walks in the park and this might be a easy way to get her into enjoying nature in a comfortable setting.
