 | | I"m not saying that the shotgun is the ultimate answer, and in a pinch I'd more than likely grab a few of my guns...
I like your idea of taking a gun and a bow. IF I was taking both i'd take a .22 and my bow. The bow would be for deer/moose/bear, the .22 for small game (yeah yeah laws say i can't kill ruffed grouse with it but whatever it's survival)
add to that a fishing rod and some trapping materials and you are pretty set for food, granted you come across some. |
Are you not in atlantic canada? sense when are .22 not allowed for small game?

Yes, I am in Atlantic Canada.
Read carefully. For ruffed grouse (or any game birds) you can not use a single projectile. Never did I say small game in general. A licensed hunter can use a .22 for rabbits and other small game, but not ruffed grouse or any game birds (such as the ring necked phesant).
page 67 of the Nova Scotia 2008/2009 hunting season regulation handbook states that..
 | | 4. No person shall use a firearm loaded with a single projectile
(bullet of rifled slug) to kill or take game birds. |
As for what year this came in to effect... I am not sure. But what I can tell you is that a single projectile, defined as any bullet or rifled slug, has been illegal for game birds since I started hunting in 1992.

You wouldn't have any idea why, would you?
I would guess they don't want people shooting at birds in the sky with bullets that can travel over a mile(I figure bird shot doesn't go as far as a .22).
Is that why?

I wish I could give you a good reason why. I really don't know. Next time I am at the DNR I will ask.

In a sense, shooting a grouse with a 12 gauge at 20 yards, most of the pellets are going to loose velocity, the rest are going to hit trees brachs, still a chance of pellets traveling further, but they would do less damage then a slug moving through the air, plus .22 are horrible for ricochet, a blade of grass and send then in another direction at 800 fps, they just dont want slugs to have the ability to leave the imediate area.

Good enough.

That's what I figured. Happy hunting.

I will defonatly agree with .22 and ricochet... I have sat and fired at a rabbit (strangest rabbit of life by the way... just wierd the way it acted as I shot at it) I was cutting off branches about 3 meters before the rabbit and coming nowhere near it... untill I had made a shooting lane by cutting off about 4 branches...
strange rabbit tho.. have you ever saw a cat raise it's back up when it is angry/agitated?? it was doing that.. but it was a rabbit... wierd creature. lol

hmm, that is weird. There certainly can be some weird mishaps in the wild, all kinds of odd creatures have come out of it.
Do it do any thing normal when it saw you?
stomp its feet? anything like that?
I know I've shot a few that squeeled, sounded just like a pig.

this one rabbit was hiding under some dead grass (we had a lot of snow melt and the rabbits were white so they had to find a way to blend in) and I only noticed it when I spooked it. It ran maybe 15 feet and hid (or so it thought) under some small spruce trees. I waited and waited and waited but it wasn't moving out from there (had no clear shot) so I deliberatly spooked it again. It ran about 30 feet away, acted like I said before, and then proceeded to let me shoot at it 5 times (first 4 were cutting off limbs) before it died... wierd rabbit man.
