Well here's my prize. Looks like a really nice sander, good quality. It uses adhesive pads instead of velcro pads too. Cool

It's probably the best sander I've ever seen. It just looks really well built. I just looked it up, and it's $65+ Shocked

I made this last Friday. No plans... just a "vision" of how I wanted it to look and from seeing others on the web. The burner is a Larry Zoeller Side Arm Burner and the body is an old propane tank. Wally Hayes (Master Bladesmith) made an identical one that day, too. There are slight differences between the two but essentially they are twins. The one in the pics is mine. Very efficient....

The inside has been coated in refractory material.... 2" of 8lb Kaowool (ceramic insulation) and finished with 2 coats of Plistex 900F (knda like clay/mortar). A friend suggested I put that bit of refractory above the front opening to keep the flames from licking the shell and disorting it over time. I have heard that you can fire it up before plistix dries completely but I'm gonna wait a bit so I don't mess it up.

You can purchase the 8lb Kaowool on Larry Zoeller's site at $7/ft. (2ft width).... We are making a few forges so I found another source that sells a 2ft x 25ft roll @ roughly $4/ft.... sorry none to spare!

I had it running before I coated the Kaowool and (from a cold start) it heated a 1/4" thk piece of mild steel to yellow in under 2 minutes. With the cavity/burner ratio I estimate it get to about 23-2500F at 7lbs running pressure. (welding temeratures)
Here is a pic of the burner set up along with a link to where I got it from...

I still need to make a door for the 2.5" through (glory) hole in the back.

Remember kids, always remember to lubricate. Rolling Eyes I tried the drill today and it wouldn't move much. Then it started to smoke and overheat. Glad to say I took it apart, and gave it a good oiling. Lesson learned. Smile

Ok, now for the questions. I'm looking for something to grind edges on knifes, and just to sharpen a knife. Is a grinding wheel the best thing to get or can you use a belt sander. Question

You can't have too much lube. Cool

The only time you should use a grinding wheel(or even a belt sander) is when you are putting an edge on a blank, or refurbishing a badly damaged knife. You shouldn't use something like that to sharpen your everyday knives. You will ruin them. Shocked

Buy a good sharpening system. Cool

^ One of the main reasons I want it is to redo a few edges. My machete has a real scratchy edge, and I want it to be smooth and more polished. Then my throwing knife gets knicks and stuff in it. Oh, also my shovel needs an edge to it. So it's not just sharpening, it's re-edging. Cool Do you know if a wheel is best or a belt sander. Question

I'll make this really easy. If its in a mechanic's shop, its in my garage. Pretty much any tool you can think of besides a furnace, bandsaw and drill press, We've got it lol
(My dad went to school to be a mechanic. Ended up being a parts guy, so much better lol)
