Striker and Fatwood |
|
Well today i went to Canadian Tire and they had some new products! First I noticed they had fatwood, I picked it up and was going to buy it just because I wnated to try it. Then something else caught my eye. They have a fire steel that comes with a piece of fatwood, so I bought that. THe firesteel is bigger than the light my fire one and it costs the same.
I also bought a hydration pack

Lol, ya, i was going to post that and let ya know. I like the stricker, it looks beefer than the firesteel.
And the Fat wood, well, for $ 6.00 you dont get very much, but it does go along way if you file it into dust.
Like i was sayong awhile back i bought 5lbs of Fatwood from RONA for $ 14.00 i got 2 boxes, lol, im good for awhile

To be honest I never knew what fatwood was until I just looked it up. How well does the stuff work?

You could have it submerged in water pull it out, light a match and set it alight
It burns like gas, well, just about. Its best to get a file and make dust, great tinder.
If you can locate some get it !.

The fire steel came with a file attatched on a string, I cutt it off, going to put some 550 paracord on it once I get it in the mail and dril a hole in the fatwood. Then i'm going to attach the fatwood to the string. Instant tinder.

That's what I did with my firesteel as you saw in my recent photos.

The resin is like oil. Oil and water don't mix.
I love my fatwood.

Well, all of the resin collects together after it dies. I think its pine, pretty sure.

Do you mean like a dead pine branch? | > the best Fatwood to harvest is the stump of a Pine tree after 10 years. You will get top quality fatwood Its all the pine reson that slowly drains back down the tree or stump. Its just like Gas !. Great way to tell is small it, if it smells like turpentine. I have 15lbs of it sweet lol. You can buy it as well from the BBQ section of alot of Home Depot type stores. I got mine from Rona. I take a stick and shred it up with an old metal file, making a dust type.
It needs only a spark with some Jute & your good to go. But keep in mind, its all about preperation in fire making.

Aren't most pine trees rotted away within 10 years?
When you find the material is it usually moist and needs to be dried out?
I have a dead white pine in my yard but it is only a few years dead. Where would be the best area to find the fatwood?
Has anyone ever tried to spark the dust from cedar after it has sat for a few years?
