I test my blade with my thumb. I feel it and make sure it's sharp all the way down. Sometimes when you redo and edge it doesn't get sharp everywhere.

Some of those look like drill bit shavings ? ........... i could be wrong.

Thats cool how they roll back Ive just never seen them do that when i do a feather stick, they always roll forward & curl.

Maybe it's time you sharpen your knife
Just kidding of about that of course.
You can make them curl up in different directions by holding your blade at different angles to the stick.
Perpendicular to the stick & you'll get this:
Angle it some & you'll get this:
You can even make some really cute,tiny curls if your blade is REALLY sharp:

I can't shave a stick. The knife usually just digs into the stick, and I have to really work to get the shaving off.
I'm amazed at how sharp I got my spike. I lopped a flower off its stem that was freestanding, and tapped my fishing line to cut it.
