My homemade knife |
|
Well, here it is.
(sorry for the fuzzy pic) Stupid camera.
Nothing special...just a saw blade with an edge on it, mounted in a handle.
I got the idea from M40.
First, I sanded off most of the paint.
Second, I used a regular file to rough out the shape of the blade, then went to work with the diamond file to smooth it out. And then the ceramic sticks to finish it off.
It took me a little while to determine what to do with the handle.
My design is a little different from his, but the basic concept is the same. I wasn't real keen on having saw teeth dig into my hands when I use it, so I made a small handle for it.
I had a small, straight, dry stick lying around so I used it. I used a small hand saw(smaller than the knife), and sawed the stick lengthwise about 3/4 of the way down it.(enough room for the lower half of the knife)
After a little finagling, I got it in there(a tight fit), and I started wondering how I was going to secure it. Glue, no...screws, no...string, yes! So I cord-wrapped it twice, going in between the saw teeth(the saw was wider than the stick), and tied it off in a unique way. When I started to wrap it, I had the end of the string at the bottom of the handle, running parallel to the blade. It went up to the top, and started to wrap around.(the wraps on top of and perpendicular to the tag end) After wrapping it twice(top to bottom, then bottom to top), I locked it off at the top(no knots, just clever use of loops), and I went down to the tag end at the bottom. I use more clever looping to get it tight, then I tied it to the tag end. After pulling the knot very tight, I cut off the ends and melted the knot shut. If you were to look on the other side of the handle you would see a string going parallel with the handle on the outside of the wrapping. This makes it very easy to take the string off(by cutting it) and make the knife into a spear. The outside string is as tight as a banjo string.
^I hope that made sense.
If you have any questions, just ask.

Did you turn the macro on?
That would be a nice blade because it's so small. I remember one time I wanted to turn a cement trowel into a knife.
Wonder if the little knife without a handle would make a good tiny throwing knife for entertainment.

I don't know what that means. It is a 4.0mp camera, and the picture was taken close up...that makes it fuzzy for some reason.

No, it is too light to throw.
Buy a throwing knife.

Ahhh...that would be the foliage setting on our friend's camera.
Our camera isn't that sophisticated, unfortunately.
Told ya I needed a better one.

I tried to make one once but couldn't get an edge on it, any advice?

 | | What were you using? | A small hacksaw blade, and then I tried to grind it down with a spinning grinder wheel.

What exactly was happening when you tried to put an edge on it?

The correct angle and a steady hand.
I don't know anything else that would help you. If you don't have that "feel" for an edge....well, I'm sorry to say there is nothing I can do for you. Telling you to hold it steady and at X degrees won't move your muscles for you. If you can't do it, you can't do it.
But, it can't hurt to try again.
They're dirt cheap, so it only costs you time.
Give it another shot.

23 degree is for keeping an edge, 45 is for when you really have a bad edge and got to work it back. Once you get a feel for it, its not hard at all. Oh, did i mention Practice ?

^Yes, practice is key.
Keep trying, SK. You'll get it.
