In colder areas, it's still too early to plant a garden. (In Canada we use the Victoria Day weekend (May 24) as a rule of thumb for planting.) But some plants can be started early in pots if you have somewhere sheltered to put them like a toolshed, garage or carport with a window so the sun can warm them but they are protected from frost and cold winds. Trial and error will teach you which ones work best. I have had good results stating pumpkin, lettuce, and other greens early. In fact, lettuce can be left in the pots throughout the growing season.

Great video, Dave. Makes me a bit homesick!

And yah, I haven't sewed any seeds yet, growing up in VT it's the same as up here, wait until the end of May or risk a late frost and lose what you planted.

I should mention in this thread since it's about gardening, that you should compost if you can. Even if you live in an apartment, there are ways to do it under your sink with worms (yes, worms). If you have a yard you can do it there, by either building your own or buying one of the many style of compost bins. You'll end up saving a lot of money in the end in many ways - less garbage for the garbage men to pick up, if you garden you won't have to buy compost as you'll be making your own. Not to mention less waste going into our landfills.

It's very easy to get started and if done right, it won't smell. There's a big misconception that composting smells, but it really doesn't.

Composting is a great thing. I remember my Dad always had a compost in the back yard.
All the grass clipings & leaves dead flowers etc. It never smelled, just of a grassy earthy smell Cool

Someone on another board I'm on said her town banned composting. I was like WHAT?? In this day and age? The reason? It smells...I was so bent out of shape I could barely post a reply to that one.

It's a wonder civilization has progressed as far as it has with ignorant politicians like that passing stupid laws. I have had composters for years and have never noticed any smell to speak of. Toronto no longer picks up grass clippings because they end up with huge piles of smelly, decaying clippings. So one of the few alternatives is to put your clippings in the composter. And the small amount that one lawn produces results in no odour problem.

I know what you mean guys, it really bent me out of shape when I read that. As for grass clippings, you can compost those very easily! Actually, I think it's best to just set your mower blade to a certain height and leave them, they'll just re-seed and help your lawn look really good.

I hang a long plastic planter box on the railing of the deck at the back of the house. I put pots of soil in it and grow lettuce. Other types of container gardening should work, too. Fill anything that's about the size of a bucket with soil and try various plants to see what grows well. Very Happy

Yes, as long as you get some sun and you remember to water daily, container gardening is very easy. No weeding too! I used to grow many cooking herbs on my balcony, you can really use any size pot. Get some decent potting soil, buy whatever you want and you're good to go. Smile

Tomatoes grow very well in containers, even cucumbers.

You should, Dave. They're really easy to grow. Very Happy Plus there's just something great about going out to your garden, cutting some fresh herbs and cooking with them. I've made some great marinades with my fresh herbs and meatballs (didn't write down the recipe of course and three years later I'm still trying to duplicate it.)

I've had good luck with those kits in the past. Usually they sell the common herbs we all use, like basil and oregano and rosemary. Good herbs to have on hand. I love fresh rosemary so much, I swear I could roll in it.
