Well depends on your area. If you have a heavy wooded area with small saplings thats a good start.
Also look for Spruce trees or any tree like this will work the same.. These are the basic things you'll need to get started with a good Shelter.
There are many types of shelters you can build, i like the materials mentioned. Im not into debris shelters.
But a life or death situation would change my mind.

Small saplings are easier to cut, haul and handle. Plus, unless you are expecting huge amounts of snow, all they have to support are the branches or what ever is handy to cover your shelter and seal it from the rain.
In some cases, you can use really light whip saplings and bend them to make a dome structure.

There is no stupid question. If you don't know, you have to ask or you never will know.
It depends on what kind of shelter you are building that determines what size wood you need. Small saplings are better for a lean-to like Max made, but larger wood can be used for an A-frame like this:
mtwolfsbane is right about the advantages of using saplings, but you can use large wood too.

there was a general "shelters" link in this section before with lots of different types. A-Frames/snow caves/others.... just take a look or search on google for certain types that people make... general search's like "wilderness shelters" or "survival shelters" could provide usefull results.
