It is not a new tip.
Firefighters, military, and Law Enforcement use these in their duties: (some call them "RANGER BANDS")

Take old rubber bicycle, ATV, and Lawn Mower inner tubes the more sizes the better.
Cut them into different widths as needed like large rubber bands.

Uses:

Silence your Gear, keep gear organized.
Gear protection(fit one over your small Survival kit.
Can be used as an aid to fire starting, it burns very good
use as a weapon to gather food(sling shot)
Many more uses......?

Good tips.

Ray mears actually carries those too to start fires in humid or wet conditons. He's started a lot of fires in the jungle that way.

Hey, I just did something really cool with a bike tire tube. I cut off a 4" piece, super-glued one end shut, stuffed with cotton, and sealed 'er up. Now it's waterproof, floats, and can be lit with a flame. Very Happy

Or you could peel it open and just use the cotton, and re-use the rubber. The super-glue keeps it closed and waterproof, but can easily be pulled apart. Very Happy

> I have seen him use it alot as well in jungle. I good source for rubber is the old bed liners of pick up trucks, the mats you used to be able to by are heavy rubber. I got just a small piece around 12" square, its 1/2" thick as well. I cut 12 decent pieces and have lots left. All free Cool
I throw about 4 pieces in with my fatwood tinder kit.
