Situation 01: Canadian Boreal Forest

Its mid fall, and its getting cold. Rivers begin to freeze over night and its raining quite a bit. Tempertures are only a few degrees above freezeing and the breeze is cool, just calling winter.

Your riding your bike through a romote area with no one around within a 15 mile radius. You dedicate your whole day to biking and gettng some good exercise. As you are biking your bike hits a sharp rock and you puncture your front tire. Knowing that traveling without a tire can take up to four times the original duration to get back, you are forced to stay put. Have only 5 hours of sunlight left there is no way you could make back to where you started with no tire.

You check your supplies and you have a few items:

1 - A can of bug spray that is half full
2 - A pocket torch that enough fluid to burn for only a split second and a strong spark each time you try it
3 - A flash light
4 - Small blanket
5 - A strong shoe lace
6 - A mounain mug (stainless steel)
7 - A swiss Army knife

What are you going to do to make it through the knight without freezeing?

Spend a couple hours trying to find some fire wood and a suitable location neer the bike trail (if not on it) for my shelter. While looking for fire wood if I came across some suitable shelter building limbs and bow's I'd gather them up as well. After getting more than enough fire wood and supplies for a shelter I'd head back to the bicycle. I'd turn the bike upside down so it is on the seat and handle bars, then use it as the main support for my shelter. Since the lighter only works for a second I'd have to improvise. I'd get a really good tinder bundle and lots and lots of tinder and small wood ready to catch fire, then i'd take the bug spray, aim the nosle towards the lighter and tinder bundle, start spray'n it and light the lighter. It should continue to burn even without the lighter still going. (at least with my experience lighting bug spray on fire!) If that didn't work I'd use the shoelace for a fire bow if I had enough time to build one... Maby a better idea woulda been to test the bug spray for a second or two to see if it stays lit without a steady flame from the lighter... By the time all that was done it would be good and dark. I'd hopefully have a basic shelter built, basicly a lean-to on the bike frame and load it up with bow's of evergreens, also line the inside on the ground with bow's to try to put a bit of air between me and the ground so my body heat could make a warmer air pocket to fight the chill of the ground. Once the fire was going I'd hopefully have lots of big wood to keep it going all nigh and into the morning. I'd have my fire about 3 paces infront of the entrance to my shelter. I'd use the blanket as... a blanket! lol. If there was no ever green bow's i'd use it as the wall/roof of my shelter.

If there was any big rocks around the area i'd put them into the fire and when going to sleep i'd fish them out with a stick and move them into the shelter, using the stainless steel mug to transport them, for added heat. Hopefully I wouldn't freeze to death.

Wait for sunrise, walk out.

That's all i can think of right now. Question: Why would anyone carry a lighter that doesn't stay lit? I could understand if you fell off your bike and it broke, but all you got was a flat! Very Happy

Well that is a good question, but the point of this was to get you thinking.

I see you did the trick i was looking for (making a torch out of the can) to start a fire.

The shoelace is just a side tracker,, but you can make a fire bow just it would take more time and work.

Yea it did get me thinking, it was a good scenario. And you can tell i went back and edited b/c I thought afterwords that instead of relying on the can potentially working i'd suggest try'n it and if not workin on the fire bow! lol. i'l have to come up with a scenario too!

Use the bike as a frame for the shelter, cut some boughs & make a roof & sides to keep wind out.
Collect fire wood. Look for a water source. Use my blanket as insulation from the ground.
Make a long fire pit, less work breaking down the wood. Prepare tinder very carefuly so it catches spark.
Flash light is a bonus for getting more wood in the night if needed.
Not sure if bug spray will burn ? never tryed, if not, just use it, lol.
And get ready for the night. Cool

Up at first sun light & start hiking out. Cool
