Science presentation |
|
In my science class in my Bachelor of Education degree I had to put together a science unit. Mine covered forces, friction, and simple machines. For the presentation we have to do a demo and I saw this as an opportunity to use a firebow in the classroom! seriously! It is a simple machine, it uses different kinds of forces on the spindle, and produces friction that makes smoke and fire. It made me think of you guys so I had to post something. I present tuesday, i'l report how it went.

That's great Daffy. You really feel like you've accomplished something when you use the bowdrill. I'm sure everyone else will be impressed too.

when i built my firebow two day s before class I couldnt get it to work well, got really frustrated and started over. My spindle was too short. I then switched to the hand drill method which worked really well in the class. I got smoke and a pile of ash in seconds and then stop'd as to not burn the chair that the ash was funniling on to. I then used a much larger spindle and was able to tighten the bow up a lot more which also yielded a great result. Was a very successful lesson. The proff really liked it as he has done the bow drill before but not the hand drill. Was a great success! I'l put vids up of the hand drill and bow drill once i get home on the 24th.

Good job!
That sounds like a bow drill to me, finicky! The spindal has to be perfectly straight, socket deep enough, and string nice and tight. And after all that you have to have the right woods. Once you have a good set it takes you two minutes. Never tried hand drill though. I'll have to try it soon.

Bow Drill is awesome, but Hand Drill is just as good, only problem is it sucks until you develop the callouses and takes you forever until you develop the technique...but both with time I guess

Lucky for me my hands (i supose it's luck in this case anyway) my hands are callused up at the top of my palms....

For the sake of the demonstration I used store bought materials (hardwood dowel, softwood base, hardwood block.) I was satisfied with the results. The hand drill was about 36 inches long (a yard) and was plenty long to get a good amount of heat produced.

I've messed around with the hand drill some, and you guys are right. It sucks until you develop calluses.
It's kind of like playing guitar for the first time. It takes a while for it to become second nature to you.
Congrats again, Daffy.

I cheated too. I used a peice of trim for my socket, and used a pine board for my baseboard. But my spindal, and bow was maple from my yard.
