How will I know when it's done without taking the lid off?
What will happen if I put it on the hot plate without the lid? Then I could put the lid on and put it in my deep freezer to cool it down.
Would that work?

It's easy to tell when the char cloth is done without opening it. It will stop smoking when it's all done. If you put it on a hot plate with out a lid it has a good chance of catching on fire because it's exposed to air. I"m not sure if the freezer will work right to cool it. Because what burying it does is cut off the air supply so it can't ignite until it cools. I can't even tell you if the hot plate will work you'll just have to try it. I think it's just a matter of how hot the hot plate gets.

I guess I'll just make a small test batch of one or two pieces and see what happens.
Thanks for your help.

Were those just muzzleloader cleaning pads? I have a ton of those. I should make some really really soon.

Anything cotton works. My suggestion is thicker material works better. It's less brittle, and it holds a coal better. Canvas or denim is superior.

I personally don't use any thin cotton anymore because its so brittle, jeans are the way to go, just cut them up and char. If you wan't some cheap ones, go to goodwill or a thrift store and find the biggest pair you can, then cut them up.

I would think so, but I don't think I would. Just incase somthing bad ended up in your BBQ, it might poison meat or somthing like that.

It would work, but it should be cleaned after doing it.
Charcloth smoke can't be any worse than the carbon monoxide from regular charcoal anyway.

This seems like a great way to produce a coal to start a fire, can't say i've ever tried it tho. Normally if I was planning on bringing somehting to tke a spark i'd just pack some cotton balls... What happens to char cloth if it gets damp? can you dry it out and have it ignight still or does it go to mush?

IMO it's way better than matches, because it gets really hot, and doesn't blow out. It burns hotter if you blow on it. I don't know if it'll work if you get it wet and dry it. I have way way more than enough so I'll try it and let you know.

Ok I just tested the charcloth. It turns out that char cloth is water resistant. Have you ever tried putting water on your fire, the ashes don't mix with the water. Same thing with char cloth. I put it in a bag of water, and fully submersed it. It didn't loose any of its stuctural integrity either. I patted it off with paper towel, and about a minute later it lit just fine. I then threw the rest of the piece in a puddle near by. I tried to light it straight from the puddle, but that didn't work. I just patted it with the paper towel then and it lit up like normal. Just one more reason why char cloth is the ultimate firestarter.

Let us know if that hot plate works. As for the BBQ, yep, that's how I make most of mine. It's easier to control the heat when you are making it. Atleast I think so.
