 | | Well, not a blow torch. But it does heat up nice. I have modifyed it so i can put a pot on top and boil water, or a small frying pan to cook My catch of the day. The coffee cans i used are the large ones, there heavyer and will last longer. |
I saw some of the other videos that guy had, and he gave me a really good idea. I'll try to take a soup can, and just drill holes in the side, for an alcohol stove. He also used a wick on the outside of it to prime it. Real cool.

 | | | | Question for everybody. When you're in an area where you can have a fire is a stove really worth the weight? I was wondering if the convenience of having instant flame outweigh the inconvienence of more weight in your pack. | > Well depending where you live, If ! you are aloud to have an open fire & you know that, then i wouldn't take a portable stove. But, if you are back packing waaaaay in the back country & your not aloud to have fires then yes, a stove is worth the extra ounces i mean my little stove weighs nothing & takes up very little room. So no big deal for me. You have to be able to cook & eat or your not going to get home lol. Food fuels the mind & body. |
Not only that, but what if you plan to have a fire and then without warning, there is a sudden rain shower. And you have to cook supper!
That is when a small backpacking stove really comes into it's own.

Yeah new prototype stove completed. I can't say this is entirely my invention. The video link is to the stove that inspired me, but the picture is mine. I just cut half of a soda can off, and used a hole punch to make two layers of holes. You tip it a little bit to light it, and when you put the pot on the side vents light up. It's not very finicky. As you can see in the picture using an aluminum can isn't such a good idea because some of the spaces between the holes burnt apart. My real version will be made with a tomato sauce can, and I'll drill my holes. I couldn't see the blue flames because it was too bright but it got pretty hot. I had a tray coated with wax, and all the wax burnt off. Then I put my peice of gum on the pan and it melted it pretty good. I'll be sure to put up video and pictures when I get the working model completed.

Just tried mine out. I made it out of a mushroom can. Don't know if you should rush to make one. It's really weird. I'm using 91% alcohol, and without a pot on all I get is yellow flame. Where's the blue jet? Then I put the pot on and the fire burns mainly inside of the can. Sometimes it will come out the jets, but not too great. I then made the holes larger, and I think it helped a little, but the stove isn't a super cooker. It's nothing near what the videos show. On the website they said it's finicky unless you get the right size and spaced holes. Oh when I'd blow in the side jets it would make raging blue flames. That was the only time it worked really good. I don't know if I want to try another type of stove. If I don't I'm either going stoveless or I'll buy a backpacking stove.

I like the one where you cut the two bottoms off 2 cans, then fix them together, that one works well. I personally don't like the halcon at all.

It's burning inside the can because it's sucking air IN through the jets. It can't get any air inside to burn out the jets. Remember what I said about the crimping the bottom piece of the Halcon stove? And remember the inner piece of the Halcon stove? That's what makes the jets work. That's what's happening, my friend.
Yellow flame is hotter than blue flame, by the way.
Believe me, Colt, the denatured alcohol will work much better if everything is right. Keep working at it and you'll get it. It took me a long time, too.

It's my parents house. They know I make the stoves, they just want one of them to be home when I do it. Is that why you ask?

I just found a review for a Pepsi can stove. It's the same concept as the Halcon, but the design is a little different.
Check it out.

Drum roll please. The results are in people. After testing I have concluded that the supercat stove beats the klasslite stove. Once I switched to denatured alcohol things improved drasically. There were only blue flames, not yellow flames like with the isopropyle. Invisible during the day. The klasslite has too small of a flame and too vulerable to the wind. The supercat gets hotter due to it's increased surface area, can hold much more fuel, and is very wind resistant. Also it's much more tough and durable. So colt go ahead and make one of those. It doesn't put out constant jets on all sides but keeps good flames going anyway. I'm much more pleased with actual water boiling tests, and the denatured alcohol. I'll be sure to put up pics and vids for everyone later.

dang. that's constructed way nicer than I could do. It seems about as powerful as my supercat stove. Maybe even better. Anyway alcohol stoves are finicky, and if you don't get them close to perfect they wont work as good as they should. I'm going to try other hole configurations for the supercat once I get another mushroom can. Trial and error.

Good job, man.
I told you the denatured alcohol would help.
You're right about them being finicky. If everything isn't perfect it won't work. Kind of like getting the fire bow to work. It's hard the first few times, but once you figure it out it's a piece of cake.
Like I said, you should do it at night. Do it out of the wind the first few times to get it to work properly. Then, once you get it working, see how well it does in the wind.(don't try worst-case scenario the first time)
Have fun and be careful!
