Net making

Ok so I've got my new twine and I seriously think I'm having way too much fun with it. Laughing

Today I made a small little practice net, and I'm going to make a really big one over spring break. Here's a pic of my tiny net.

Are you going to make a hammock?

That would be cool. Cool

If you use that twine on a permanent shelter it may rot after time. Confused

Not sure what I'm going to make. I think my parents want a hammock. Wink

If I don't make a hammock I'll either make a big square net or a deep round one that tapers together. I'll be sure to post pics here when I finish.

The twine should at least last a summer, and that's how long I'll be using the shelter. I'll probably be gone next year so I don't need it to last too long. Cool

Right now, just for fun and practice. Although you could use the basket to put anything you want inside. If you got a big net it would work great for a shelter roof. Just throw debris on top and you're good to go. Very Happy

Here I made a bag yesterday. It took me 2 hours, and now the tip of my thumb is bruised. Laughing

It's about 2' long, and gets about 6" wide.

How do you like them apples? Still more room to spare, just ran out of apples. Confused

Ok here's my attempt at explaining it. I even made some pretty pictures in paint. Laughing

The tutorial is for making a net, but I'll briefly describe bag making too.

Step one.
Run a line out, say parachute cord. (big black line) fold the lengths of string in half and attach to parachute cord line via prussik knot, larks head, etc... They should be spaced out at the desired hole width. So you'll have multiple strands attached to your baseline.

Step two.
grab two strings from two different strands and tie them together using a simple overhand knot. Continue this down the line. You should now have triangles formed. Leave the very end strings for now.

Step three.
This step is basically the same as the last step. Grab a strand from each of two different knots that are next to each other. Tie them with an overhand knot. repeat down the line. This time one of your strands will tie with the end strands.

Step four.
Same as the last step, but this time the end strands wont be tied to anything. Just repeat, repeat, and repeat the steps until you run out of string and you'll have a nice square net.

Bag making.

This is essentially the same but you start it differently. Instead of tying them to a line you bundle the strands together, and tie them together. I whipped them together because an overhand knot would be bulky, and take a lot of string. You don't have to fold the strands in half either. Make sure you have an even number of strands too or else there'll be an odd string out. Just take two strands and tie an overhand knot to tie them together. work your way around. then tie a strand from one knot with a strand from a different neihboring knot. Tie them all at one level, and just work your way down.

To make the bag wider you tie the next layer of knots down farther, and to make it narrower you tie it up closer to the previous layer.
