Heres my old bow, my new one is a little smaller.

I tried for an hour today again, still no luck. I am going to keep trying though on my days off

Yeah I got a differnt string too, its just utlity cord. It works ok, jsut the biggest problem I have is the spindle always goes flying out as soon as I get smoke.

yeah thats probably exacally what happens haha. Its just when you see smoke its so exciting, then you mess up.

I have been working on this for a while but mark my words i'm very stubborn with these things and I will get it!

Troop, this is a shot in the dark... but ... maybe try a bow with less of a bend to it. I'm thinking that the bow is flexing while you are on your "out stroke" and your "in stroke" is tugging on the spindle a bit due to the slack that is taken up as you change direction..... Do you get what I mean? And it would be most apparent when you speed up your pace as you try to achieve an ember... sound right? I know for a fact that Woodsman uses a straight bow and praises it's efficiency and ease of use.
Rick

I don't think that would be the problem for that NorthernHunter, if you notch it too big, either your spindle will slip or you will just have to work hard to get enough dust in there for a coal. If you coal goes out, it may be that you are still stopping too soon. General rule, when you start getting a ridiculous amount of smoke, go for another 10-20 seconds just to be on the safe side if you can. And treat it gentle at first, your first breath should be nothing more than a whisper.

Well for me the hole started small and kept getting bigger as I used it, I guess enough so that stick dosent fall out when your drilling. I never was successful with making a fire with it but I know that much
