Hey SK...
Well...
I think it's just that you getting them at the wrong time ..Too green...
Once they have ripened, they are as flammable as gasoline....
If you want to use them as tinder, just snap one off and twist the head, and it will come off on large fluffy clumps that will take a spark from a Ferro rod easily....
As someone else said, it makes excellent insulation as well...
Wait a little bit until they dry out,,and you'll see what I mean..

I messed around with a cattail today and yeah, it does go up like gasoline. But it burns out in a flash. If I had more of them, I would try different methods, but I have better ways to start fires and no more cattails, so...
