Wool Blankets, Groundcloth, Pad, Tarp. Work? |
|
I dont want to have to buy a new sleeping bag just for personal camp use. If I set up a shelter with theese materials, could I stay alive?
Groundcloth
Foam Mat
3 Wool Blankets
Tarp Above
Hot Rock Heating
Layered in This Way:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
_-_-_-----_--___-_-_- Tarp __-__---___----__-_--
___________
Blankets
_______
Pad
________Groundcloth
So basically. A groundcloth under a mat and wool blankets, tarp overhead, fire and heated rocks.
Would I be alive sleeping at 30 F in this?

I believe you could, depending on the temperature though.
I did a similar thing with one of my camps, excpt the pad I used was a thermarest. I didnt do it in very cold conditions so I dont now, but I do know its a good idea to have some sort of thermal blanket or someting of that matter as part of your roof. I made a shelter in the winter and used a thermal blanket as part of the roof, the shelter was not closed it had one opening. So when I made a fire, the heat was radiating inside. It was pretty effective in terms of heat.

Yea, I meant a therma-rest, not foam. I was thinking the tarp in a lean-to config. with a paralell fire-lay.

It would most likely work, but try it at home before you depend on it. The last thing you want is a failed plan and a cold night.

Nuttin worse than trying something in the winter when it comes to shelters just to find out it doesnt work as first thought. As FLF9 said maybe try it at home in the back yard & if its not working, RUN IN THE HOUSE !

alright hold on a sec, lean-tos arnt that great for winter unless you really make everything perfect. Les actualyl says in cold weather lean-tos are uselss, but I dont quite agree with that, only thing is they require some modifcation.
First thing to keep in mind is the wind, you never want to make your shleter a wind tunnel or have smoke constantly going into it, so thats something to be conscience of. But I do believe your simple design with the tarps, and thermarest and whatnot will work.
