I am Spoon Man !! |
|
Well, made my first spoon.
I had a piece of Poplar, its soft so a good easy wood to learn with. I started with a piece of Holly, it is alot harder to work. I wanted results faster, so go soft wood first if you want to try spoon making.
I have a small good carving set, it does help but not really needed. A sharp fixed blade & maybe a small one would help, & sand paper. It took me about from start to finish 1.5 hours.
And also if useing for eating mixing food etc, use { Cameilla Oil } to apply to the clean wood.
This is a Nontoxic oil that cooks use on there knifes when cooking.
Its something you use if you are an outdoors kinda person that uses say one knife for all small jobs.
Carving, cooking, preparing food, fish, meat etc. It helps carbon knifes from rusting.
It also seals the wood. I had fun on this small project, im now thinking of a bigger spoon when im really hungry !! Cheers.

Cool I had a blast doing this. I am buying a Hook Knife tomorrow, lol.
Some people call it a Cook Knife, Bent Knife. Lee Valley has a nice one.
Thats great your doing the spoon/bowl thing. I want to do a bowl after another Spoon.

Thanks Max. I had to make another one. A scoop.
The first one is the spoon, so, needed one to " scoop " out all that rabbit stew
The profile for the scoop handle is alittle differant, just to change it up.
I have a wood burning tool so i gave them a marking & names turned out alright.
The pics are alittle fuzzy, was in a hurry to snap them & post.

Wonderful job! And i really like the woodburning. I always hated the smell...but thats because some of the wood i burned was pine(really not good or healthy)

Well Heck, i was thinking & i needed 1 more utensil to complete my Bushman eating things
I was thinking the handles on my spoon & scoop are short, great for eating, but what about getting over the fire to say.... stir the rabbit stew ?. Kinda hot getting that close so i made a stiring, flap jack flipping thing'a Ma-jig.
I put holes in it so stiring would be alittle easyer & if i wanted just a hunk of meat i could get it & not the juice.
I seen this one at my brothers, so i took a piece of paper & traced it out took it home & took my last piece of Poplar
and cut it out with a hole saw to speed it up alittle. Carved the rest to fit my hand and general shape i wanted.
Turned out kinda cool. Im set for the summer camp cooking in the sticks. No more plastic utensil's for this guy

Ok guy/gals ... I finished them all and added some leather cordedge. I just cut strips from a scrap piece & used beeswax and coated them, braided them together, then tied them with waxed thread. Great stuff, very strong.
So im all set with my Bushsman Utensils for camping this Summer !
