Movie Reviews |
|
Hey everyone loves movies, at least I would assume/hope so. Anyways sometimes some movie might look good and be crap, and vice versa. If you wanna make a short review for a movie go for it. Please include a pic of the movie poster/cover.
Lets see, i'll start with american gangster:
My rating: 7.5/10
Story: 2/2
Duration: 1/2
Realism/grafics/action: 2/2
Acting/Cast: 2/2
Interest: 0.5/2
This movie was pretty good, the story was good but it was way to long. It took too much time to build up the story in my mind and there were some side stories about the cop's own life which were pretty pointless. The movie all in all was good but it was pretty boring at times as there was very little action most of the time. The last half hour of the movie was really good though and it was well played out.
I would recomend seeing it, but it is not as good as it apears on the previews. Plus they never played the theme song in the movie, Jay Z Aint no love in the heart of the city.

Good Idea Trooper! Do these need to be new movies or can they be older?

Yeah, American Gangster is rated R for like violence, adult language, and nudity, heard a review on the radio the other day. Are you talking about National Treasure with Nicholas Cage? If so didnt that come out like 3 years ago?

JOY RIDE
2001
Suspense/action/horror.
Director: John Dahl
Stars: Steve Zahn, Paul Walker, Leelee Sobieski
Rating: R, for occasional violence and a bit of swearing
A college student buys a 1970's Chrysler Newport so he can spend quality time driving a girl he knows from high school halfway across the U.S. His wild & crazy brother ends up riding with them, too. On the way to pick up the girl, the wild brother uses a cb radio to play a prank on a trucker. It turns out that the trucker is a psychopath with a poor sense of humour. He spends the rest of the movie stalking the trio. The whole movie is well done, including the action sequences and the way they build suspense. J.J. Abrams ("Lost") is one of the producers. It contains many references to other movies, including "Duel" and "North By Northwest". It's available on DVD, but be careful: There are at least 3 unrelated movies on DVD with the same title. The best extra on the DVD is the commentary by Leelee Sobieski. (Also look for her in a movie titled "My First Mister", with Albert Brooks.)

Two movies based on the same French novel:
WAGES OF FEAR (LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR)
French, 1953
Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot
Star: Yves Montand
Rating: 14+ in Ontario; has basically what you would expect in a gangster movie from that era.
A French getaway driver hides out from the mob in a rat hole of a South American village. To earn money for his fare out of there, he takes a job with 3 other men driving 2 trucks carrying highly volatile nitroglycerine over a rough jungle track. One wrong move would mean kaboom. I can't think of a more suspenseful movie.
You might find it on tv late at night in black & white and in French with English subtitles.

SORCERER
1977
Hollywood remake of "Wages of Fear"
Director: William Friedkin
Star: Roy Scheider
Rating: PG in U.S.; has just a little of everything
"Wages of Fear" is the better movie. But "Sorcerer" is good in its own right. The premise is the same, and the drive through jungle is suspenseful enough.

I thought of this one because according to my listings, it will be shown on TVO (which those of us here in Ontario get) at 1:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15/07. Be sure to set your vcr.
THE SWIMMER
1968
Director: Frank Perry
Star: Burt Lancaster
Rating: N/A - It is aimed at an adult audience, but has no specific content unsuitable for kids.
A man attending a pool party in a very wealthy neighbourhood decides to swim home via the swimming pools in his neighbour's yards. As he goes from pool to pool, visiting with old acquaintances, his trip becomes a metaphor for the journey he has taken through his life. The Swimmer is the type of movie that Hollywood has rarely made; a must see for real film buffs.

INFERNO
1953
Director: Roy Ward Baker
Stars: Robert Ryan, Rhonda Fleming
Rating: n/a - Some violence, on par with westerns of that era.
This is simple: If you like Survivorman, you are almost certain to enjoy Inferno. A rich tycoon is left to die in the desert with a broken leg by his wife and her lover. They figure he's vulture chow for sure, and after his bones are found they can take his money and start a life together. But the rich guy isn't about to lie down and die. Despite the odds being greatly against him, his will to survive drives him to make full use of what few resources he has.
You almost expect him to stumble across Les cooking a squirrel or some grasshoppers.

I AM LEGEND
2007
Director: Francis Lawrence
Stars: Will Smith
Rating: PG-13, for violence and frightening scenes.
This movie seems to go by pretty quickly, especially considering that nearly the whole time is spent watching Will Smith talking to a dog. But the tension level is maintained, and there are some truly scary scenes. The special effects and acting are both good. Smith plays a medical researcher living alone in Manhattan. Everyone else has been killed by a cancer cure gone wrong, turned into a zombie, or eaten by the zombies. These zombies are similar to the hyper, ravenous variety in "28 Days Later", except they only come out at night. (Thus, the movie covers zombie, post-nuclear and vampire themes.) But there are animal strains of the virus, too. The zombies have zombie dogs, which are bad enough. But the movie also shows us a zombie version of a creature which is scary enough in its natural state. I won't spoil things by saying what it is. The good doctor lives in a fortified house with a well-equipped lab, trying to develop a cure for the virus. He can only venture out, heavily armed, in the daytime, hunting for food and borrowing DVDs from his favourite video store. For anyone who enjoys zombie movies, or the post-nuclear theme, this is a must see. Likewise if you like action, adventure, and a few good scares.
This is the 3rd movie to be based on the book of the same name. It was made in 1964 as "The Last Man On Earth" with Vincent Price, and as "The Omega Man" in 1971 with Charlton Heston. The former is an unappreciated movie that I have yet to see, and is perhaps the very first zombie movie. I have seen "The Omega Man" and enjoyed it. I'm interested in watching it again now that I've seen "I Am Legend".

I just saw it too, i got 2 works to say "product placement".
Decent movie but culda been ebtter I think the ending was rushed. Started off well but edned not so great.
There were too many mini commericals, like he uses the ipod, the fords, bob marly etc.
I liked it but was a little dispointed

Hmm. Guess I liked it better than you, Troop. And I guess I'm becoming numb when it comes to product placement. I didn't see much room for improvement. I did find the last scene kind of creepy, though. It looked like it was run by a cult, and it didn't look to be fortified enough.
I've been thinking about something else regarding "I Am Legend": I've been refering to the enemy hordes as "zombies". Now, I'm not an authority on such films, but I'm thinking that they are not really zombies in the strictest sense of the word. As I understand it, zombies are the dead, returned to life. These guys in "I Am Legend" were never dead. They were infected by a virus and turned into, well, mutants. So "mutant" is probably a more accurate word. They behave like zombies, but could conceivably be cured of what ails them if a treatment could be developed to counteract the effects of the virus that infected them. With true zombies, the problem is that they are no longer dead, as nature intended. The only cure is to make them dead again.

I waited for 3 years to see all the moveies. The fellowship, The 2 towers, Return of the king.
This is Thee ! best ever ! fantasy story ever wrighten. JRR TOLKIEN
Peter Jackson did a unreal ! masters job of making this story come alive
And in 2010/2011 The Hobbit will be released. Another 2 part movie. Woo Hoo.
If you haven't read Lord Of The Rings ... I would say pick it ! if you like great fantasy. It is the best IMO.

Good to hear! I didn't know they'd do the Hobbit into a movie, but I'm glad. I just hope Jackson makes it, so it's in the same style, and flows well into the Trilogy.

And its been settled, so it's Jackson at the wheel now. So the Hobbit should be freaken awsome.
