You can use something as simple as vegetable oil, its cheap and gets the job done, there are some nicer oils you can use, you may want to ask AskdaMice about that one, he is the local oil expert, seeing as he treats all his leather, he may be more knowledgeable about it.

i was doing some research and i am going to be making my next bow out of white birch and not willow just cuz i have alot of birch in my area and willow didnt work out to well for me last time it broke after the first few shots but i have learnt alot from my mistakes with that bow. and also i read that birch makes a great bow. i also read about sinew backing your bow but you can use other cordage like nylon,hide,ect.. so i am going to back my bow with hide cuz i have lots of hide still from all the deer i got this year im going to pick out my birch stave tomorrow i will take pics step by step and post them this time rather than just the finished bow.

it doesnt have to be crazy str8 you can steam it and make it str8 but the str8er you can get it the better i would think lol. are you going to be spliting the wood or just carving it as is?

> well, im alittle picky, so i want the straitest piece i can get I have acouple of places that ive spoted and if nothing else shows up on my hikes a will go back and pick the best of the 2.
Im just going to pick a 4" diameter tree & carve it out. I have my 64" longbow that i will use to guide me through the shaping If it turns out good and shoots with out breaking im happy, even if it's only like a 15lb pull i dont care. Its all about preparing yourself for the outdoor living. We are lucky to be able to be living in nice warm homes to practice are skill's, so what if we make mistakes, we just open the fridge and grab food

tomorrow im going to be starting on my birch bow im going to take this one alot slower than my last one and i hope it will turn out better. so wish me luck

Better to back your bow and not need to , then to not back your bow and have it break. Any oil works but I have found boiled Linseed oil to be the best. Tip unless your bow has perfect symetry (growth rings, grain etc.) Do yourself a favor and back it with something or sooner or later it will almost always break . Here is the result of going thru 60 staves it's nearly perfect grain. This even though almost perfect will also be backed with sinew or something
