I managed to make charclothe, but I was wondering, if you don't have any extra cloth in the wild what else can you char to replace it(bark, grass, leaves)?

What containers do you guys and gals use to carry flint, stone, and charclothe? Dutchman.

I am pretty sure you could use a twig. It will not be as good, but it would be always available, and would be of use if kept dry. You would have it catch a spark and blow on it some until it caught a bit of flame and light the other tinder/small twigs.

If not maybe you could use a animal skin that has been cleaned, scrapped and dried? They use to use it as clothing so it might work.

Jute is a type of twine " string " its been used as tinder starter for many years.
Just break it up to a fluffy pile, & just a spark from firesteel, Poof ! Fire Cool
And fatwood is resinated Pine, this stuff is awsome to have Check your local hardware store & look in the BBQ section in the fire starter area. I have 10lbs of the stuff now. Smile Cheers Dutchman

Hey Guys...

I have several containers I use to make char cloth...

I have a bulk can (old tabacco can) that I use to make bulk batches of char cloth,,several hundred pieces..

Then I have smaller tins that will do several dozen...

Small tins such as Altoids or even screw top pellet tins work nice...

I made a fire kit for Survival Kid a few months back and used a small pellet tin for a char cloth tin... Hopefully he is using it !! Smile

Hmmm........ that's pretty interesting Normark. You might want to check this out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110153981234&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001
This person's gotten as much as $22.01 U.S. for his kits.
I've been thinking about getting one since it's such a neat little kit but thought I'd hold off just in case someone here offered something similar in our new selling/trading section.
Just a thought for some of our more handy members. Wink

One can use punk, which id the rotted, semi-decomposed wood from trees, or pith, with is the white substance at the center of some plant stalks. I have used both sucessfully.

you can char just about anything in the bush... some work better than others... leaves and grasses get very brittle... a few fungi are good for char... or can be used, uncharred, in some instances.

Rick

I sometimes put a piece of true tinder fungus in my Firepouch kits.
