a cool idea plz read |
|
when i was reading tom brown's field guide he talks about insulation. one of the things he said that he did once he figured out to stuff his clothes with grass, moss, cattail ect.. to keep warm. what he did was he took two old shirts and sewed them together, he sewed the bottome and the sleaves leaving the top open so that you can stuff grass, cattail ect... in there and when hes out in the bush and its cold hes can stuff his shirts with this stuff and will keep him warm and then at the end of winter he just takes the stuff out and washes the shirt.
so reading this i thought it was a pretty good idea cuz its already been like -25 here and so last night i took to old shirts and sewed them together. so next time im out in the bush im going to stuff it with cattail and see how well it works i think its a good idea and that way you dont have to spend alot of money on those stuffed winter sweaters, you can make your own

Id say go for it Northern, you never know how it will work for you untill you try it. Trying stuff like that is a good thing, cause you just might have to use it under a real situation. Cheers.

I would think the cattails should work well... any material that can maintain dead air pockets for insulation... only trick is no filler material that compresses when wet (like goose down).
I hate to even bring it up, because it's so sad, but countless street people stuff newspapers and trash inside their clothing using the same principle, to stay warm.

I've heard from reliable sources that some people are allergic to prolonged skin contact with cattail down and break out in lots of hives...you may want to patch-test yourself before walking around in a suit stuffed with it. The item in question was a pillow and not enough batting was used to completely enclose the fluff.

I read just recently that someone has invented a coat they are hoping to distribute to the homeless in Toronto. It has a weatherproof outer shell, and compartments inside that can be stuffed with newspaper for insulation. Without the newspaper, it will fold up small enough to be easily carried. Sounds like there are some potential paying customers here for it.
