Situation. |
|
It is the Fall. You are in a forrest hunting and you become lost. For arguments sake you are in the Boreal forest (Anyone who has seen this episode of survivorman knows the unpredictable weather patterns. You have hiked in to your camp and are hunting at least 8 miles away from your camp when you realise you are lost. Nobody expects you to come home for at least 4 days. The reason you are lost is because your compass has been dropped and has broken. Survive for 4 days or find your way out with the following equipment.
1) A 12 guage shot-gun and 1 box of ammunition (25 rounds of shot)
2) Your hunting pack (Normal school bag style with 2 broad straps)
3) A swiss army knife or leatherman multi-tool or both (whatever you personally own)
4) a flashlight
5) a book of waterproof matches with 4 left.
6) 1 large plastic garbage bag
7) A folding saw
8]your broken compass

Fix it |
|
First I would fix the compus and then be on my way. A compus can only stop working, it is still a magnet that can be put on the end of a pivot outside the case if that is what is necessary.

Given the weather, you can use the large plastic bag as rain gear. You have 4 waterproof matches which means that if you move by day, you have 4 nights worth of fire. You only need to go 8 miles or so, I can probably crawl 8 miles in 4 days! That leaves direction, food and water. Water should be easy, plenty of lakes. Food, I would probably just go without (I would try to get some at night while at camp, but not really necessary). Direction, is what is left. As long as the sun is shining, or the clouds are not bad at night, you should be able to plot a general course out. I mean, if you were using the compass to get in, odds are you were following one general direction, all you need to do is be able to plot a general course in the opposite direction. You could try to repair the compass, I suppose, but I wouldn't waste too much time on it...
Me, I even have zipper pulls that are compasses! In the woods, I have at least 3 compasses on me at all times! But hey, that's just me...

Fix the compass as Falon said, go to your back up compass (you should always carry a secondary compass, matches, whistle when hunting)
Why is your hunting pack so bare with no rations, ferro rods, Ax, proper knife, E blanket... et al?
If you can't repair compass: make a 3 stick shadow compass, take your bearing, mark it on the ground and if to late in the day make camp. The next day take your bearing go back to your camp and start over again.
When you get home repack your hunting pack with a reasonable kit.

The kit was so bare simply for the situation.
