I Got Lost In The Bush Today!!!!!! |
|
Today I was out hunting with my dad and we went to a spot over by Swan Hills in northern Alberta and me and my dad parked the truck and went for a walk down a cutline and ended up on another road. my dad had to go back to the truck and I kept going for a little ways walking down the road now I am out in the bush all the time by myself and I don’t normally lose my sense of direction but I came up to a few ruffed grouse and before I could get close enough for a shot with my 410 they ran into the bush but most started flying away. I went after one of the ones that just walked away and he just kept going farther and farther into the bush. the ground was really soft and mossy and the tops of the trees were so thick that I couldn’t see the sun light very well or anything and a big mistake I made was when I went after the grouse, I wasn’t watching for where I was going I was watching and listening for the chickens I was after and I noticed that I was actually walking for a little while and I stopped. Now everyone that goes out in the bush knows that you don’t walk in a straight line so its not just turn around and go back specially when your out after an animal cuz they really go all over lol but I stopped and took a look around and was like ****. I couldn’t remember the way back and because there was no snow on the ground it makes it a little hard to just follow your tracks back out lol. I didn’t really panic but I was actually worried and started to rush back in the direction I thought I had to go but then I stopped and sat down under a tree and started thinking about one of the survivorman shows where Les said that when people get lost they panic and just start walking in a random direction until they really get lost and so I thought about that and when I sat down and was looking around I took note of the supplies I had and another big mistake I made was I took my psk off me back at the truck and forgot to put it back on but I was thinking ok im still good I have my lighter, mag stick,3 knives,2 bear bangs and launcher, and a few other things. anyway I knew my dad was to far away to hear me call and so once I relaxed and stopped to think for a few min I got up and walked toward a clearing I could see way off in the distance and when I got there it turned out it was a road, it was actually the road me and my dad were on about an hour ago so I just walked all the way around back to where my dad was at the truck. I wasn’t lost for to long but it was long enough to make me worry just a little bit and it was long enough for me to make a stupid mistake and go in the wrong direction and be really screwed lol. but thanks to Les and that one show that he says to stop and think for a sec rather than just running around getting more lost lol I still might be there so thanks Les but I kinda feel pretty dumb for making those mistakes when I know better than that but it happens I guess
So the moral of the story is don’t run off in the bush without keeping track of the path your taking even if your looking for something take the time to make markings or look for landmarks to help you on your way back.
Moral number to lol always keep your psk on you cuz you never know what will happen.
P.S. I never did get that chicken lol

Wow thats wild i'm glad you gout out, I know the feeling of being lost and not knowig where to go, it defienlly isnt a good one. But one thing thats definat is that you much stay calm or else you pretty much screw yourself over and make bad decsions.
Good job!

Good ya got back. One thing you should always do when in the bush, meaning no trails, is always " Blaze " a trail.
Its as good as foot prints in the snow Cheers Northern

Don't feel dumb, NH... feel lucky that you had that lesson and nothing bad came of it. Some people will never get that "practice run" at being lost. What you learned and remembered from that experience is a part of you, now... not just something you read or watched on TV. I envy your experience in a strange way... but will try to avoid it the best I can.
