Some of our members debated this topic on Les' forum, but I thought I'd see what everyone here thinks.

Do you carry a firearm on the trail or while hiking? I've had several experiences personally that have formed my own opinion on the matter, and I do carry a .357 Ruger revolver on the trail and when camping. I also carry a can of pepper spray for a non-lethal alternative. I don't intend this thread to become a "my gun is the best trail gun" debate (that would be a good topic on its own). I am simply asking if you do carry a trail gun.

You bet I have atleast one gun on me at all times. Ussually it will be a 1911A1 on me from the time I get out of the truck, until I get back in. Around camp, I have the M590 shotgun (with bayonet lug) loaded up with #4 buck for four rounds, and the other four are .50cal 1oz slugs. Near me at night is the M4gry with M6x light/laser combo loaded up with 30 rounds of Hornady TAP selfdefense ammunition. Seems like I'm going to war, but maybe I am. Wink There are only two animals that worry me a bit while out in the field. The lions, and I have only seen them once, and it was moving way to quick to watch for long, and the animals that walk on two legs. All that firepower is only for other people, sadly. Where I go camping there has been four pot fields found in the last three years. One very large one was only a quarter mile from where I camp! Last year some bear hunters found another one, and were forced into combat when they started exchanging gun fire to save their lives. In all the time I've been camping alone, I have only had to use my shotgun once to dispatch a coyote who must have been sick, because he came walking right into my camp and between me and my fire. Shocked He turned and growled, and the thunder followed soon after. When I hike into the woods, or even the desert alone it looks like I'm going to war sometimes. I have my pistol, with two extra mags, and the AR with two extra mags. It almost isn't worth it to hike without some kind of sidearm around here anymore.

I'm always armed when I'm out and about, be it the woods or the city. I'm not too worried about any animals on the trail, I've not seen that many that many of a predatory nature, and the ones that were were eager to leave. I am, however, not too keen on being at the mercy of any two legged nasties that may wander into camp. When you're far enough into the forest, there is no one to look out for your safety other than you (not that this changes when in the city, but 'help' is more than just a phonecall away).

Anyway, my 1911 makes a good woods companion.

I don't normally if I'm hiking... except in our family's forests, and then I usually carry my .22 or 9mm for snakes... but I must confess I've almost never needed it, just good to have along for safety.

I don't see the need to? Maybe some bear spray at the very most. Confused
