Kayaking/canoeing

Who here enjoys kayaking or canoeing, and how long do you usually go out for. Im thinking about getting a small sea kayak to start out with to do some overnight trips up the river i have here.

I've actually never been Kayaking, but I love canoing! It's so relaxing, almost zen...

My family go canoing almost every year. Its what I always am looking forward to that canoe trip. we go on the buffalo river in TN and sometimes in AK. it is such a beautiful river. I have not yet to go on an over nighter but we plan to this year!

I've been kayaking, and that was fun, but I've got a canoe that I absolutely love.

I am a canoe head myself. I like the traditional way of getting around on water. I posted a pic in Photos of the canoe i just got, cant wait to get out & kick back on the water & do alittle fishing as well. Cool

i might go out this weekend, ill get some pics. Also, there is a challange from the township to see who can canoe/kayak the entire nation river(180 km) so i think i might get together with some people and do it. Very Happy

hey guys, i had a couple questions about canoeing actually. i've never been, and neither have the group of friends i'm trying to plan a trip for. i live in VA, and the only place really, is the shenandoah river. i found a company that will schedule a trip for you, but i need to know some basic info. how far/long should a canoe trip be for beginners? we're not much outdoorsy type people, since we all live less than half an hour from D.C., but we can handle long hikes/trips. my gf's fam is from idaho, and she's been out hiking for a week in the back country before. she didn't really like it, but she said she'd be down for a small canoe trip. so yea thats bascially it.. how far/long of a trip should i plan, and what type of stuff am i supposed to bring? thanks in advance, and sorry if i highjacked this post.

Hey Bob Loblaw. I would maybe just try for 3 or 4 days at first. That would be a day paddling, a day of rest, then paddle back out. Or paddle in, rest 2 days, paddle out. I love canoe camping. I as well am planing a 5 day outing. Some time soon.

thanks dave, but 4-5 days is something none of us have, since we already took our vacation to the dominican republic in feb. and that we are all professionals/students. i was thinking just as a 1day thing on a saturday. get out there early in the morning, rent our canoes, and get out for maybe 3-4 hours. my question was, as a group of beginners, would 3-4 hours be too long? and what types of things should we bring on our little trip? thanks again for the welcome dave!

Ah ! day trippin. Thats cool. It was late when i read the post getting crossed eyed i guess.lol.
Get on the water as early as possible. Bring some water for everyone, unlessyou have a pump filter.
bring fruit apples/grapes/bananas/etc. Got to fuel the inner engine. And no, i dont think 3 or 4 hours
would be to long. Are these beginers Fit ? cause if the winds pick up it can be demanding to paddle.
Other than that, enjoy the day. Cool

are they fit? absolutely... my british friend mills, is a "futbol" fanatic, and even plays for a semi-pro team in the D.C. area. my friend henry is a volunteer fire fighter, mills' gf, works in a law firm, but she works out on a regular basis.. same with my gf.. she works out atleast 5 times a week, while she attends law school.. out of everyone i'm probably the most unfit. i work in construction as a field manager, so that means i'm driving constantly. on top of that i have night classes, so by the time i get home i'm in no mood to workout. i smoke a pack of lights a day, and enjoy fine foods such as chili dogs from 7-11... haha, but i do get out to my old boxing gym atleast once a week, so hopefully i'll be fine.

thanks for the advice dave, and i understand.. i was up till 3am last night researching all this stuff about canoeing.
