Hmm interesting. I would say that looks like a little complicated to make in a survival sitation
But its still really cool

I've seen that before in a book of mine. The latest edition is called "Participating in Nature" by John Elpel. It's a very good survival book.

Ive been wanting to make one of these for awhile. I think it will be one of my winter projects.
The Pump Fire Drill was from the Iroquois Indians, a fire drill that used the principal of the flywheel.
The Fly wheel was of hardwood with a hole at the centre through which the drill stick is forced and attached.
The crossbar of hardwood ia attached by a cord or leather thong & slides freely on the drill stick.
The drill stick & fireboard use the same woods, dimensions, carved holes, & tinder as the fire drill.
The Pump fire drill works by first winding up the flywheel which pulls up the cross bar. The cross bar is then
pushed down & its momentum rewinds it in the opposite direction.
The process is repeated until there is black powder & smoke .

I've seen this before and I imagine it takes alot of coordination and patience.
Would be cool to learn, though.

I have seen those, they actually aren't that hard to use if you take the time to make it properly

The ones that show you how to make one using rocks, and bindings, make a hell of a lot of sense. A person could start out with an axe, and knife and have fire in an hour after he makes one of these.

Hey Colt.
This is something that you would make, i have never seen or heard of anyone selling a pump drill for fire making.
Unless someone else here knows of a person a place that sells these, i know of no one.
Ive been going to make one but still have not gottin around to it .... maybe give it a try Colt

I think you would get way more out of it if you build your own all the materials for it you could get for free its just your time. To be self sufficient is a great thing in the wilderness.

Also, you can make it to your size, something better suited for you. Commercial ones are like a one size fits all deal, which isnt always true
