for those of you that don't use a sleeping bag when in the wild what kind of blanket do you use.
I have tried cotton, don't like it for moisture absorbtion, but nice in dry climates

I've always used a sleeping bag, and until something better pops up I think I always will. Cotton in the outdoors is a bad idea.. Like you said tfischer it soaks up everything, and takes forever to dry.
edit-- also very flammable.

I wish I could use wool as a blanket... but they drive me crazy with itchiness. I've had to use wool many times in various situations, and definitely it's better than cotton for warmth, and when wet... but my skin just can't take it, if I want a decent night's sleep.
If someone would only come up with a good thick (and inexpensive ) cashmere wool blanket. That would work for me!
Have you experimented with synthetics? The acrylic pile stuff or Synchilla from Patagonia for example?

I ussually only use blankets when possible/practicle. I don't enjoy being confined inside a sleeping bag. So for me, a ground cloth, wool blanket, and how ever many blankets I need after that.

I use a fleece blanket sometimes in my sleeping bag. Not just the blanket though, too chilly
