ok here is a little trick. but it only works on jeans. just get your knife and sorta scrape at your jeans. have the blade flat against the tought jean and just kinda scrape. if you do this right you should get a nice bit of lint. just dont always do it in one spot and dont do it too often.

I've done that before lots of times, it works great. Thankfully I wear ripped jeans a lot so its no biggie for anoter hole. If you have a hole then your in luck, just pull at the loose strands and you'll get lots fo fluff

I was watching TV and was bord and was playing with my knife on my jeans and I looked down and there was a good puff of lint! I'm just sayin its a go way to use your surroundings. Cool old jean works best.

yes for sure, and at the end of summer milkweed is great for starting fire. It feels like cotton

well i guess the general consensus from everybody here would be a very fine, dry material. maybe i'm just being lazy and not exploring all the possible types of tinder i could've come up with. but i still say firesteel would be last on my list to use as a means of making fire.

Not to preach at anybody but we were always taught in training not to even wear jeans when out in the bush. If it so happens that you are stuck or in a survival situation they work against you because if they get wet they have a wicking effect that draws the water throughout the pants making you susceptible to hypothermia. If anyone shows up to SAR practice in jeans they get sent home.

ya, I was about to say the thing about the jeans in the bush and that you aren't even supposed be wearing it when camping or in the bush.

Hey Guys...

There are lots of natural tinders out there that are nice to use..

Dried Grass
Birch bark
Inside of Cottonwood bark..
Cotton from poplar trees
Milkweed
Cattails
Dried golden rod flowers
Grape vine bark
Certain dried mosses

These are some of my favorite natural tinders and have used them all with only a firesteel

I'm sure there are a bunch of them that I haven't listed, or tried or are not available to me.
