Is your vehicle equipped for the worst? |
|
I recently went to the store a purchased a whole lot of items to put in my car. I also took some of survival gear and put that in too.
I notice when I go anywhere I use a lot of this stuff. So its better to be prepared, even if it isnt an emergency you just happen to need something.
WEll I stocked my truck with:
- Strong towing chain
- Fire extinquisher
- 75feet of rope
- Matches
- An axe
- Folding saw
- Headlamp
- crank flashlight
- 2 rolls of electrical tape
- Some plastic ties
- Emergency blanket
- Tarp
Now this may sound like a lot but they all fit under the 2 front seats.
Its good to be ready.

Good stuff Troop, I don't drive but my car is equipped with a fleece blanket and a flashlight (one of those little one bulb LED's, key chain things) and some garbage bags and a few pens I'm not that well equipped, at least not as well as you

Troop, look into a 5/8"+ nylon towing strap or rope {double loop} (nylon not polypro)
chains have a habit of parting if they are jerked or over loaded without warning and they do whip back at you. Nylon also can part but it will strech out a lot first and is much less likely to smash anything that it meets as chain would. You can have a wear piece braided for you (about 6') to hook up at either end and save you longer piece due to wear.
No knots in any rope or chain is creates a shear point.
Add a small "heat" (gelled alcohol) type of stove and double the blankets or add a sleeping bag especialy for winter.
A shovel with a handle long enough to reach halfway under your vehicle.

Great suggestion, I had some towing rope so I replaced the chain. Besides I may be able to use the rope for other uses.
I need to get some flares, garbage bags are a good one and I could easily pack away my sleeping bag inside.
Some of you are wondering, why the hell are we doing all this? Well I thought about it and have noticed that there are scearios that are realistic where I may be stranged, at least temportatily. Ive had to drive in the night on roads cars dont drive in much, middle of nowhere. If my car broke it would be a miserable night. So having these supplies is a plus.

I use 3 strand rope as I can splice it if it breaks or adjust it easier that multy strand.
You can use the chain (with hooks) as the wear piece to hook up under you vehicle where the nylon can be easily cut.
I also have a small come along to ease the self pulling if I am alone.
Carry work gloves I do now since I badly cut my hands trying to push a car that had icycles under the fender.

THats not a bad idea. Work gloves in general are great for survival type things or just plain old work. When I used to build shelters I would ahve work gloves until I lost them. They are not a bad idea im gonna pick up a new pair, why risk getting cut etc.
I've also almost got frostbite last year so I will carry a pair. there is nothing worse than touching metal in winter

Inside my El Camino I have my big PSK which has a rain outfit (pants and jacket) a big poncho that can be used as shelter, billy can with some items in it (3in1 whistle/compass/matchbox with matches, another compass with whistle, magnifying glass, lip balm, plastic bag, small folding knife, mxz saw that cuts rock, metal and wood, 2 big chlorine tablets that could purify atleast a few hundred gallons, metal cup, cordage, flashlight, lighters, small fishing kit in plastic bag, 100 yards of 15lb fishing string, more cordage) and on the side of the bag holding everything is my Buck 119. I think there might be more stuff in there but it's in the car. I also had my Medium sized axe/hatchet in my car (but need to put it back as I pulled it out) and a first aid kit, a couple of towels, bungy cords, tow rope, spare gas in gas can, extra water for car in 2 - 1 gallon jugs in the back of the bed, or behind the seat.
my BOB has alot more stuff and will require about 4 trips to the car because I got 3 seperate bags of stuff, plus 1 trip to grab food/clothes so I just keep my car fairly stocker, I also am going to add a slingshot I recently bought to my car kit along with a few hundred steel shot.

Whats funny is I normally only drive 10 miles to work, and back (20 miles round trip) so I am normally never in a situation were if I get stuck by my car I am stuck some where (I could walk the rest of the way almost by the time someone gets to me). But you never know so I would rather be careful and have something ready then be on a once a year road trip and get stuck 20-30 miles for another person.

I dont have anything related to survival in my car, a generial rule is that for every 100pounds you loose from your car you will gain a tenth of a second in the Q/M. it might not be much, for the chances of me being in a survival situation when im located in a pretty urban environment, ill risk it and keep lightweight. also, i dont think to meny girls would be confortable if i had an axe, some knives and rope hidden under my seat.....

In a blizzard you can be "isolated" from safety by less than 100'. Many people have died trying to walk out that last 100' or less. Winter survival is real even in town just get bogged down once to realize it.
We rescued a university professor and his family just north of Point an Baril on the 69 north in a blizzard and they had nothing and would have possibly frozen hadn't we come along.

Hoodlums just had a discussion about all of that, I'd check there.
