hey dave, just had one more question. how do people go about canoeing down river just by themselves? i mean how do they get back up river from where they started? would they drop all their gear off, drive down, and then hike back up to the canoe or what?

> Well, the best thing is a 2 car system. 1 vehicle is driven to the place where you finish your trip.
Then you all take the other vehicle to the start of the river trip. That being said, if its a day canoe trip then you could
portage but that all depends on the terrian. If you can use the 2 car system, do it.
> Now if its just you doing the trip, then you would have to get someone to drop you off at the start & let them know
when abouts you would be at the point of pick up. I would bring a flash light & water & food. And if possible a small tent, cause you never know, the person that is to pick you up may not show up ! cause something has happened.
Think ahead when you go alone. pack extra gear even if you dont " think " you'll need it.  Cheers BL

so i went to rei, and i bought a PFD... $145USD. wow, i'm such a horrible person... i don't even know if i'm going to enjoy it. somebody please put my bank account on hold.

> Anytime BL i like to help if i can. I think once you get in that canoe & get on that water, you will like it lot's.
I have not river canoed before, totaly differant from lake. But when i get out on the lake & 15 minutes go by im a differant person. I just start to unwind & kick back. Somtimes i just float around & take it all in.
PFD is a good thing. Its Law here in Canada, as well have to have a bailing device & 50ft marine float line & water proof flashlight & a whistle.  Cheers BL.

hmm.. not quite sure if we've got those same rules here in virginia, but a PFD is a must, that much i know. heres the link to the PFD i bought today at rei. i really need to get my digital camera, so i can post pictures of all the money i spent on camping gear, without having gone once in over 3years.

PFD looks good. Ya you MUST get a digi camera so we can see all the camping/canoeing & stuff you buy, lol.
My camera goes everywhere with me, like my wallet  .

haha yes i did, and the pics should be in the.. post a pic of your gear, in the gear section. and i did go canoeing, but not the way i would've liked to. since it was with friends. i'm gonna have to go back real soon, and make it a 2 day trip. i'll have pictures up once i get them. i'll probably post them here, to make it easier.

I solo paddle all of the time, I love going out for a day or so, and then fooling around once I'm out there. Relaxing and holds many photo opportunities.

Long overdue pics I promised.
Me and one of my very good friends... as you can see, we're totally gay for each other.
Don't let the last two images fool you.. We only had about 3 each, and that lasted only an hour. The rest was just paddling, and enjoying the scenery. I wish someone had taken more photos of the scenery though, haha.

Shenandoah River, VA. Not the greatest thing compared to whats out there, but was definitely worth the trip.

I'm longing to get a chance to be back on the water. As of right now, it can be on a Saturday, but I've already committed myself to getting to gym to train whenever I have free time, and I don't want to break that no matter what. At this point, my backpacking trip will have to be late Nov. early Dec. if at all. And no canoe trip until spring break 09. Ugh, life is such a hassle, lol.

I think aiming off is important. When you aim to one side or the other of your target. then compensate later. Say you want to find a nice small creek on a large lake. If you aim straight for it you might end up to the right or left due to slight error. But here's the catch you don't know which way you varied. By aiming off you can say aim to the right, and when you hit the shore you know you have to go left to find the creek.

True. I dont do alot of ocean canoeing. Just lakes, but at some point there is a canoeing trip i would like to do which involves some tricky passages along the west coast. So i thought it was smart to learn more about navagating large sections of water.

I used to have a blow up raft, a wedding gift and I used to make my late husband row he was good. but when I tried it we just went in circles. it is hard to do for me at least.
