To be honest, your all focousing on medium to long term survival, Which I dont think is the way to think.
For me its a whistle. I can make everything else with my hands, but your voice only lasts so long. In most situations, someone is going to know how long your supposed to be gone, and if you were smart the location you are going to be in, letting them know where you are is much more important than finding that great berry bush, or constructing the meanest lean-to possible, or packing to most bang fo you buck survival knife. know what I mean?
If that were not the case, a ferro rod. Again, I can do everything with just my hands, but why not have fire on a stick.

Either a good knife or a firesteel.

That's a winning combo in my eyes! A good fixed or folder knife and a firesteel is something that anyone should carry when in the bush And my two favorite pieces of survival equipment too

 | | I too think it would be my Wave. It's always on me, and has saved the day more than a few times. Not to mention I only paid $30 for it. |
Archer - where did you get that cool graphic of the bug?
