 | | Just rope...that's kinda funky, you can just use the straight edge for that can't you? And you cannot sharpen it in any way right? It will just get duller and duller until it's just a waste of blade. And then you've got only half of a blade right? |
Wrong.
Partial serrations can be sharpened with the right kind of sharpeners designed for that specific task.
The partial serrations are kind of like steak knives, I guess. Useful for cutting different things. Well...maybe.

 | | I didn't know you can sharpen serrations? It's like you can't sharpen a saw right....? I asked this because I am looking at the Gerber LMF ll Infantry with partial serrations and I wanted to know if I could sharpen. Do you know how I can sharpen it? |
Cabelas
That's one way to sharpen it.

Well, to be honest, I don't like any of their designs. So I'm not much help. Sorry.

I don't really know what they have to offer, but for a folder I'd recomend good quality sainless steel, just for rust issues. I have one with carbon steel and it got rust spots through the powder coating. Mainly because of moisture on your hands if you put your hands in you pockets, or from not wiping the blade off daily. I'd say go 3-4" that's a good size. I wouldn't pick a curved blade, because they're VERY difficult to resharpen. Other than that it would be your personal preference and style. Also I don't like serrations on a blade for sharpening reasons.

Cool. Be advised if you get it that it may rust if it gets damp. I'm not sure if that's stainless, but even so be careful.

Um, I kinda just bought a knife. How'd that happen? Of coarse as ironic as it may be it's a cold steel. I bought a ti-lite. It's the one where you catch the tang on the corner of you pocket when you pull it out and it opens. The bad news is that it only works with your right hand, and I'm left handed, but the good news is that I can still carry my other folding knife in my left pocket.

I'd say there aren't any begginer knifes or expert knives. There's just good knives and bad knives. SK has the right idea fixed or folder, then tell us what you need it for. I can say that fixed knives are easier to keep clean, and they're stronger, but are cumbersome to carry. A folder you can take with you, and they aren't a workhorse, and you will have to get better quality steel.

Good points, Mystik.

I would say to begin with a Mora or a folder like a Leatherman E304x.
There is no specific "best" beginner knife, but those are a good place to start. Get some experience with one or two, then buy more!

I would really recomend a fixed knife, or at least a locking folder for any decent sized cutting job, little ones like on the wave jsut don't hold up to heavy use.
