In the Heat |
|
Went out today in the bush to collect nettle fiber even though the temps are in the 90's F(33C) and very high humidity. Just curious am I the only crazy person to go in the bush when the temps are in the extremes. (I know it nothing compared to the high temps out in the USA west right now.)
If you are one of the few that does brave the heat, how do you stay cool and what clothing do you wear or take with you?

I'm almost useless in the heat
I wish it would never go above 25C(77F)
I think all a guy can do is drink a lot, try to stay in the shade and wear lighter color cloths.

I stick to shaded areas and wear white clothing in the summer.
Sometimes the bugs are so bad you just go,ah the hell with it, and walk around shirtless but the bugs are brutal.
Frequent hydration, white clothing, and staying in shaded areas. For me at least.
Thers not much you can do to beat the heat; one reason i'm a winter man

Shade, water(Gatorade is better), and a wet bandana across my forehead makes it tolerable.

General day to day activities -> less than one hour of hard labor/work out = only water
Any hard work out/activities that last for more that one hour = water, and gatorade
But yeah, we've been running 98-115 here lately. Mosty we just drink lots of water, and keep moving. Believe it or not, but you feel a lot hotter when you slow down or sit down rather that keeping working. Now our humidity is starting to move in, and that is making it a real PITA.

Here are a few things I use when hiking in Florida's hot and humid summers:
Light color/weight clothing with good moister wicking capabilities. Lots of a high spf sunblock. Stay in the shade as much as possible. A nice wide brimmed hat. Lots of ice in your drinks. A slower pace. Frequent breaks. Something to fan yourself with. Use common sense.

In addition to the good suggestions already posted, I will add move slow a bit slower when doing things and try to think about something other than the heat. The heat feels worse when there is someone constantly talking about it to you. A good reason to go out alone, or choose your hiking companion wisely.

That last part of your statement about picking your partner carefully could be a whole new topic, and it is so true.
Your partner can get you hurt or killed.

Generally I don't go out if it's above 25C (77 F) Thankfully it doesn't get that high too often.

It has been getting into the 80s and 90s here in New York and is sooooooooo Humid. Drinking water has become second nature, especially since my job requires me to work out in the sun pretty much 8 hours a day. I go through about 5 litres of water in that time. It's all fun though...right?....right?!?

It is way Hot here in East Central Illinois, heat index about 115 (F)
I learned last weekend that 1 quart of water is not enough in this heat so I am changing my gear list for extended time in the heat.
MORE WATER.........cause I ain't drinking melted yellow snow!

I hear ya Tfisher! So humid and hot coming back to Kansas City.
And I still can't believe how humid and muggy Northwestern Minnesota was, with killer mosquitos everywhere. I thought Minnesota would be cooler and gentler... but no, it got downright freezing in the nightimes, and then hotter/humid than heck in the day. Ugh.
