Lost in the Barrens/Two Against the North
By Farley Mowat
Original Publication 1956, 244 Pages
Summary: Orphan Jamie, lives in a remote trappers cabin in the Canadian north with his uncle Angus Macnair. When Jamie and his Cree Indian friend Awasin tag along on a deer hunt with a band of Chipeweyan hunters, they wander from base camp and have their canoe and most of their supplies destroyed in a rapid many miles away. They must learn to fend for themselves in the harsh Barren Lands of the Arctic, and stay the winter planning to make an escape in the Spring.
Mowat first entered the Barren Lands after serving in WWII. He was forever attached to the lands harsh but beautiful landscape. He spent much of his time in the Barren arctic learning skills from the natives, who were still living apart from civilization. He wrote many other books on the Barrens and it's inhabitants, and conveys the spirit of the land in a magical and alluring manner.
This book is a MUST READ for anybody interested in the outdoors, and was this that sparked much of my own interest in the natural world. It's a classic of it's kind and deserves more recognition. The adventures in this book leave you with excitement and envy.

I highly recommend getting/renting the book, the film in it's watered down screenplay is tame in comparison to my imagination when I read the novel. Should be in your local library.
I only saw the movie once and I don't remember it well. I have to get it on DVD one of these days.
