Hatchet/Axe talk

Hey guys, Just thought this would be a cool topic to post pics and discuss Hatchet's and Axe's. Ive been eyeballing this for a while and thinking about getting it. I dont really like the look of newer ones like the gerbers, i like the traditional look. What do you guys think?

Hey Guys..

Colt...

The traditional looking hatchets such as Wetterlings and Gransfors bruks are Awesome hatchets..
They are warmer and nicer looking, however I'm more of the practical type....

Wooden handles, crack, split and get loose, and theres nothing worse than any of those things happening to a hatchet....

My hawks all have wooden handles, however they are easily replaceable in a matter of seconds and you are back up and running...

Mess up a handle on a Gransfors bruks hatchet and it's a pain in the Arse to replace properly..In my opinion,, the hatchet is never the same...

This is why I opt for the Gerber/Fiskars type of hatchet..

Not nearly as nice to look at or use,, but durable, dependable,, and Nearly bomb/idiot proof.

Frosts of Sweden also make a nice hatchet with a similar type of handle..
The firestone skinning axe is also molded...

For traditional use I would go for something along the lines or Wetterlings or Gransfors bruks
but for practical Hardcore use,, I'll stick with the fiberglass re-enforced handles...

Your right normark, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages of the gerbers. Looks like ill have to pick one of those up then!

Hey Colt..

Yes,, they certainly do..

However don't go by what I say,, you have to feel right with the hatchet you choose...

I know alot of people that wouldn't carry a plastic handled hatchet if their life depended on it...

They simply don't feel as good as a wooden handled one....

However for practicality they can't be beat....

Steel is good, and I've literally had mine shaving arm hair...

All of mine are Fiskars brand..

Same thing really,, other than Fiskars doesn't make the real small Back Paxe..
It's the one up from the Back Paxe..

A 14" handle I think...

They were just on here locally at Canadian Tire for $11.99.. Typically they are in the $20 range...

Good price either way...

For me, the traditional axe is the only way to go. I'd sooner fall into a watery grave than bring an alien, plastic handled toy into the wild.

I recently bought a Wetterlings 19" Hunting Axe for general use, because I couldn't afford a Gransfors Bruks. I'm hoping it should at least be better than the $20 hatchets I've been using.

Good choices Colt, I've heard good things about the Gerber Axe/Saw combo and I think a couple people on this forum own one. Rifleman axe looks bad ass, looks like a middle ages beheading instrument.

Colt,, I don't know what you are using the hawk/ hatchet for,, however in my eyes,, they are two completely different things..

Yes, you can do some chopping with a hawk,, however it's not meant to do the same type of work that a hatchet will do...

In the same way you wouldn't throw a hatchet like a hawk...

This is just my personal opinions though.. Some people may do differently, you may as well...
I however throw hawks and chop with hatchets..

My hawks aren't what you would call sharp, rather pointy..

Maybe I'm the only one...

Normark, I didnt plan on using the tomahawk to chop that much, Mainly to throw. I guess ill just go with the gerber. I have a coleman htchet, but the blade will not stay sharp at all. Oh well, thats what you get for paying 6 bucks for a hatchet lol.

lol, come on OGTL just because they have a plastic handle sure doesn't make them toys !?.
I have both, Wood & Plastic handle. Cool

And both do a great job.

I have a riflemans hawk, and sometimes take it over my wetterlings. I love the fact that I can just tuck it in my belt and go. The thing about the ruflemans hawk is its alot heavier than a normal hawk, its designed for chopping, when as the norse hawl it for throwing.

BTW, I also have the Gerber and I love that thing as well, its just I prefer wood handles.
