Not the most educational book ever, but one of my favourit. The Hachet by gary paulson, ive read all five hachet books, none fail to entertain me at all.

Its about a guy who's plane crashed in the canadian shield, and he has to survive with a hachet and nothing else. Its probably my favourit series of books.

Yeah, I remember reading that and one of the sequels (the one where the Government official took him back out ot the same area, and tried to learn he secrets, but ended up getting almost-killed) in Middle school. Pretty good books, but I'll take good ol' Jack London any day.

I read three of the Hatchet books when I was a kid. I didn't know there were 5. Gary Paulson, I have heard, always experiences the things he writes about, so for the Hatchet he lived Survivorman style in the woods with limited supplies. Not the exact same scenario, certainly not for a year, but enough to add some authenticity to his writing.

The Hatchet is pretty good.
The sequel "Brian's Winter" is too unrealistic though, so I stopped buying the sequels after that.

It's been so long since I read this book I have forgotten it all but the very begining. Embarassed I remember him having the hatchet on his hip, and the pilot having gas, then having a heart attack. After that it's all just a blur. Maybe I should go get this book again. Embarassed

no thats another one of my favs thats "My Side of the Mountain" good book Cool
Hatchet is a young man is going to visit his father in the Canadian Shield and his mother gives him a hatchet before he goes. the plane crashes as az had mentioned and he must survive in the woods by a lake. everything he dose practically revolves around his hatchet. he lives because of his hatchet. he is rescued after 6 months. during that time he encounters many dangerous creachers like a bear, wolf (I think), a skunk and so on. its really well written. I own the book but havent read it for a long time. I still remember it very well. Very Happy

Though aimed at the younger audience, It's a good read for any outdoorsman. I've been through it at least 10 times. One of the sequels, called "Brian's Hunt" is another good one, pretty horrifying and dismal ending. I've got four books, and I'm missing "The River". I've read it, and it's my least favourite.
