My First Shotgun |
|
Well I was bestowed another Great gift from a family member. I have been given a Remington 1100 12 GA semi-auto with choke, swivel, and swing and the swing holds 9 extra shells. Very nice custom shotgun to be given for my first one!
It was given to me for my upcoming trip (and birthday) for a almost week long stay in the moutains! I would post a pic but the pics come out horrible.

Awsome! I really want a semi-auto shotty, but I just can't make myself buy one.... even though shotguns are my weakness. Those are great guns though, and have a very strong operating system. What chokes do you have in it? What loads are you planning on taking with you? Personally my "camp gun" holds TAP 00, and Federal Slugs (the huge hollow point .50 cals) and federal #4 buck.

The choke has full, 5, mod, 3, IMP CYL and 1.
I am trying to look into what type of Ammo I should use in it since it has a modified barrel (25")
It doesn't appear to be rifled so I think it will be ok with steel shot.
What type of ammo would you recommend? I will be getting some self defense and some for hunting bigger game possibly.
I was thinking of carrying 2 scatter type shots first, and 2 slugs behind. I could fire 2 shots to scare off a bear or big animal, and then if it didn't work I would have 2 if it charged (if I had 1 loaded, and 3 ready to go) plus I will have the 9 shots on my sling I can use to reload.

I just picked up some 200 rds of birdshot, I will end up picking about 500 rds atleast of triple ought buck, 200 rds of slugs and I should be pretty set for my trip.
I have heard for self defense 000 buck is the best, so I would prob only keep one slug at the end for one last ditch shot. put 3 000 buck in front of it because i think it would be fine for most things right?
Never owned a shotgun before.

Nice shotgun! It sounds like you're well-set. The bird-shot with modified should be fine for hunting small game in the bush. And keep the slugs and buckshot handy for emergencies... or are you specifically wanting to hunt bigger game? Double check on licensing and such, as I'm not sure where you're located. And are you going to be with other hunters?
My 3 big tips... get a good cleaning kit (I like "kleen-bore" brand stuff) and
1. Clean and oil well.
2. Clean and oil well.
3. Clean and oil well.
Also give it a cleaning and oiling before you take it out shooting for the first time.

I am not specifically looking to hunt bigger game unless it's trying to hunt me. I will be sticking with Squirrels, Rabbits, and any bird available. I won't be hunting anything bigger due to the issues with licensing (maybe next season).
I already had a cleaning kit for my 10/.22LR Ruger and it goes all the way to 12 GA so I used that last night, and gave it a good oiling in the receiver, barrel and the outside so it should be good to go. I pulled out alot of gun poweder residue as this is a older 70's/80's gun but hadn't been used to much accept lately when my cousin used it for some skeet shooting.
Today I will look for a better digital camera and I will try and take some more pictures. Also from the research I have done I think i will be picking up a few hundred rounds of #5 shot (good for squirrels up to coyotes from that I have heard) and then also pick up a few hundred rounds of some #4 (verstaile shot for stuff slightly bigger) and the final last 2 would be about two hundred rounds of 000 buck (self defense) and maybe 50 or 100 rounds of slugs (don't see much use for them, but you never know)

It sounds like you are well prepared for a lot of things! Personally I am not all that impressed with the double ought, and tripple ought buckshot. Personally I like the #4 buck, and load that in my home defense gun. But then my best friend ONLY shoots 00 through his shotguns, and swears at my number four shot. To each their own, shoot plenty of each, and find what rounds you like the best, and pattern the best for what you want to do. My Home Defense (also my camp gun) is loaded with three number four bucks, sitting over five .50cal hollow point slugs, two slugs on one side of the speedfeed stock, and two 00 on the other side of the speedfeed. Then on the side saddle I have four more of the slugs. Mostly if it's close you want a nice spread, then you need the slugs to reach out a little farther. Atleast that has worked in the past for me. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah i have heard 4 is good as well, but from all the self defense info I have you actually might need 1 buck. It has the biggest pellets and the most for your shot. But as you said to each there own.
I picked up about 30 rd's of hollow point slugs today so I am well equipped. I really just need some 4's for squirrels and rabbits as I don't think the 8 (bird shot) or the 00 buck will work. And I know the slugs won't work. So I will be picking up a good 20-50 bucks of 4 or 6 shot before I head out. I plan on taking a trip and unloading a good 50-100 rounds and test each time of ammo I got as I still have yet to fire this puppy up. I got a video camera that is allright so I might take some videos/pics.

I know some mention'd oiling and cleaning a lot, but if you are using it in really cold weather make sure you use a fine enough oil. If the oil starts to get thick in the cold it can affect the operation of the firearm untill it warms up again.

Thanks for the info. I am using regular gun oil, I will check the label and see if it is made for cold weather. I will try to take some pics in the daylight of it, and maybe some of my shooting it off some.

You might try "Gun Butter" if you're going to be out in really cold weather.
http://www.gunbutter.com/index.htm
I haven't used it myself, and it's been many moons since I was hunting out in bitter cold, but I've heard very good things about it especially in the cold.
In fact I've been meaning to switch to it for my handguns.

In cold weather remove all oils and grease and substitute powdered graphite lube.

Azarcher got it right #4 buck is very good, 00 buck (2-3/4 mag) for heavier targets, 000 just has to few pellets for the intended use for most people. Remember the larger the pellets the fewer the number of pellets in the shot cup.
Load the shotshells in the magazine tube in reverse sequense with the last shotshell to be fired going in first and the fisrt shotshell to be used loaded last.
For animal defense I use a loading of heavy Brenneke slug first shot followed by 2-3/4" mag. 00 buck next 2. The animal will be further away at first so an aimed shot is possible but as it covers ground the 00 buck will do its work.
I f I was in a more exposed setting (artic tundra or snow pan) then it would be 3/ slugs backed up by 2/ 00 mag buckshot in my hand ready to speed load, remember the magasine limits in shotguns.
