Isn't this similar to the wire saw that Les used in the plane crash episode?? I think it is, and his broke in just a few minutes. I remember Les commenting that he wouldn't recommend it, or something like that.

I tried one years ago while I was out in the woods, and it quickly snapped. Maybe it's materials have improved since then, but I'd definitely prefer a small folding camp saw.

This is nothing like that crappy piece of wire Les had. This is a pocket chainsaw. Click the pic, and you'll see one work. Cool

I've seen those retarded wire saws in sporting goods stores and I regard them as crap. Those thing are more useful as snares(as Les demonstrated), kind of like maglites are more useful as clubs. Surprised

AHH! I'm sorry, I stand corrected. You're right, I was thinking of those thin wire saws. Embarassed

See that I would be interested in. I dont like the using both the arms method too much thats why I dont like the wire saw. But if it was in bow form that would get me interested

One of the things you have to be really carefull about when you use a pocket chainsaw is that if you lace in your hands through the loops and cut through a standing tree even a smaller 3- 4-5" dia the butt end can kick back butt stroke you in the body or head!!!!
You are literaly "tied to that tree" with nowheres to go.
See a logging manual or even a chainsaw manual and they tell you the dangers of being to close to a falling tree with no avenue of escape. Also the dangers of kick backs.
Also most people with this type of saw would not use an undercut to direct the fall of the tree they would just pull away and do it in one cut...no control!!!!
Use proper and safe felling techniques, no need to get hurt especialy in a survival situation!!!
Any situation for that matter.

That very true, a dimention we have not talked about.

Since your wrappe around the tree it puts you in an awkward position. The tree can very well just fall on top of ya its pretty dangerous. Now i'm telling you this because i've done lots of tree cutting over the past 4 or so years and some trees just come down really violently (and i've been crushed by one before I was lucky I was far enough or I would not be talking to you right now).

So if anyone has this or and is planning on getting it, I suggest being carful.

This looks like a cool tool. I used to work for a tree company for about 3 years, ive got lot's of chainsaw time.
And i would not cut a tree with a diameter more than 5 inches. Just that even a tree this small & you being that close
cutting it, the kick back or twist could no doubt do majour damage to you, or even kill you.
Now, if there was a dead fall on the ground that was a nice juicy 10 or 18 inches & you could get the chain saw around it & pull to cut, thats a good thing. Cool I think it would be a good tool to pack if you were heading out into the sticks for 6 or more days. Another good back up.

Would it work to make your own, out of a chain saw blade?

Hmmm ?? not sure on that. The self pull pocket chainsaw may have a totaly differant cutting action to it than like a chainsaw with the motor. Because a motor chainsaw does only cut one way. I know the cutting teeth on these and there set up to cut in one direction. Cool idea, but i dont think it would work.

Hey Guys...

Ahhh THe Pocket Chainsaw...

These things are Frigging Awesome...

My dad and I have cut Lots of stuff with these...

We use them to trim branches high up in the tree...
I use a small fiberglass recurve,, shoot a leveling line with a fish arrow over the branch, sometimes as high as 15-20 feet, then pull up a rope with the PCS and with a back and forth motion we hack the branch off nice and clean without leaving the ground..
I've used it up to an 8" branch.. Takes awhile but it gets the job done...

We've even cut the tops of trees off or where theres a danger of kick back...

I either go up a ladder or my climbing tree stand and cut the top of the tree at just about half way on an angle... Lower the saw, and insert the PCS into the cut; go down and clear everything away..

Then we finish it off with the PCS...

It for sure is one handy piece of kit...

I haven't yet used it in the woods though.. It generally just pulls duty around the yard...

Get one,, you'll find it Handy to have!!

ttyle

Good stuff Normark.
What do these weigh ? Would it be worth it to carry one opposed to just a good folding saw. Cool Cheers.
