Magnesium Flint Stick |
|
Great small compact tool to make an effective fire. Requires a sharp knife with a fixed blade and no windy conditions.
Scrape a little pile, the flip over and strike the flint!
Thats it

For sure. The value exeeds the cost by a ton.
Its cool how it cant get damaged too.
If you drop a lighter on something hard it may break. If you drop it in water it will rust.

I"ve used mine at least 100 times over the summer. I used to use it to light fires on the beach on cold days or when noone was there and we were bored. Still a ton of life left in it.

Cant remember who said this, but someone said they've had one for over 10 years.

I've never had the pleasure to use one until now (a friend got it for me as a stocking stuffer). WOW, I love this thing! I'm going to have to buy some more!

They are great, I'm just waiting for a multitool with a magnesium stick in it already.

Only thing I hate about the mag stick is that it kills the blade, always needs sharpening after. But otherwise it rocks.
I've actaully sacraficed the blade on my S.A.K for the mag stick, I use the blade on my muti-tool as my primary bushcraft tool

i carry a folding exacto knife that i use for my mag stick. good thing is that you can flip the blade if it gets dull but even when it is geting dull you can still shave the magnesium since the blade is so thin anyway. Throws a really good spark too!

I never use my good blades on my Magstick. I have a old german pocket knife for that job.
Any cheap pocket knife is best for that.

if you break a bow saw blade don't throw it away! take a piece of the broken saw and grind about 1 inch of the teeth down so it's flat, and then wrap some tape around it if you want (this is what you will hold when striking so why not make it a little more comfortable to hold). then have another 1 inch of the saw blade remain as it is and use that to trim filings of magnesium. flip it to the flat side and strike the flint towards the pile.

Why do you guys use your blades for scraping?
Just use the spine of the saw of you sak of multitool, and if you dont have one, just get a cheap hack saw blade and break off a piece about 3" long, and us the spine on that.
Save for poor edge!

Sorry to drag this topic back from the dead, but I was wondering how you personally shave the magnesium off (If you use one) I've seen people hold the block vertical and scrape downward with the blade, which takes foevever and scatters fairly large shavings about. I personally lay the block on its side and scape side to side with the blade perpendicular to the block. It makes lots of little shavings fast and if you're careful, they won't even fall off the top of the block and can be put exactly where needed.
